Computer will not reboot. problem with bios?

Help,

I tried to update the bios on my dimension 5000 from the latest version on the dell website. However the pc just hung up and after I forced it to shutdown it will not reboot. A friend of mine thinks I may have corrupted the bios of even lost it all together.

When I turn on the pc it beeps at me (not through the speakers but the tower itself) several times and all the lights on the front. ie the A, B, C and D light up. Two are green and two are yellow/orange although I cannot remember which way around.

The screen goes straight into standby mode.

Does this sound like a bios problem and if so how can I rectify it or do I need to buy a new motherboard or even a new PC. I was thinking of upgrading soon anyway since my pc has been having a few unexplained crashes recently.

Any help will be greatfully recieved. I am desparate.

Thanks.

Peter

Thanks for the reply. Given that the bios update was from dell, do i have any comeback on them?

In most cases if a BIOS update fails and the PC will not reboot the only option is a new motherboard.

Dell motherboards are proprietary and custom size, thus a Retail motherbord will not work you will need another 5100 motherboard, or if a new PC is in the future this is a good reason to do it now.

No unfortunately. Bios updates in and of them selves carry inherent risks. That is why a lot of folks don't apply them unless the update fixes or address problems that they are experiencing.

Sorted. I reset the CMOS and the computer is up and running again.

Very Happy!
