"DEVICE=C:\DELL\RTC.CLK+R"

This is a left over from the days of the Y2K scare.  People were concerned about their systems being Y2K ready so Dell added that tweak to the config.sys.  The line really isn't needed on the XPS T model and the system will run just fine without it.  On my XPS T I have eliminated it long ago without any problems.  If you are in doubt then simply Remark out the line by placing REM in front of it in the config.sys and the system will skip over loading it a boot up.

"....... file lsl.com..."

What is your operating system?  With Windows 98 it is a simple matter of physically installing the card and then installing the drivers for it in Windows.  Nothing for the NIC needs to be loaded via the config.sys to autoexec.bat on a home system connecting to the Internet.  If by chance you are using this system on a network then it would be best if you posted your problem in the Networking and Internet forum.  You can click here for a direct link to that forum.

You can also click here for Belkin's support web page.  From that page you will find the drivers and manual.

hi,

Thanks for your reply. I have the drivers and setup procedure but get the ldl.com error

When I installed my card I tried to load the driver from the disk provided but got a message to load the Novell netware disc which I don't have. It turns out that the file ldl.com was required.

I can't find this file anywhere and the setup wont work without it. I get an exclamation mark against the device in the device manager.

I would try using the drivers posted on their web site since the download maybe just the drivers without any extra software thrown it.  If that don't work, have you tried letting Windows install the card and then let it select the drivers from it's own database?  Possibly Windows has native drivers that will work just as well.

What is the exact wording of the error message and are you using Windows 98?

Yes, I have tried to let the system do it by using add hardware and selecting allow the system to choose the best driver.

I have since removed the card and attempted to reboot the comp back to it original state but still get the error message and now I can only get into the safe mode screen

I have not tried to load drivers from Belkin web site which is one thing I will attempt when I can get the computer running again

Copy and paste both your autoexec.bat file and config.sys in the forum here.

Also in your C:\ directory do you have any backups of the autoexec.bat and config.sys?  Some installer programs will rename the files to something like.... autoexec.bak  or  autoexec.001......  config.bak or config.001.   If you do indeed have backups that were created by the Belkin install then simply rename your current autoexec.bat and conflig.sys file to another file extension such as .bel and then rename the backup files with the proper file extension.  The files date should give you an indication of whether or not the Belkin program created the backups.

This should at least get the system running again without the network related errors.  Make sure all the REMs in blue are at the start of those lines.  The config.sys file looks good and doesn't need changing.

hi,

I have remed out as instructed.

On boot I get options to load and again safe mode is highlighted.

If I choose normal the comp shuts down.

??

What do you think about doing a clean install. My win 98 disl says " for pc's without windows" so I am hoping that it will work. ?

I have transfered most of the file using the windows xp transfer program (although for some reason it did not pick up the emails, and address book but I think I will suffer that.

If cleaning up the autoexec.bat file didn't get the system running then there is a good chance that there was others changes made in Windows as well.   I'm assuming that you tried in Safe Mode to uninstall the software related to the Belkin card.  If so then try doing a Registry Restore and choose a registry date prior to installing the card.  If that doesn't resolve the problem then I would do a clean install of Windows 98.

Ok,

I can't find a system restore. I used to have a "snap shot" program but not any more.

I have uninstalled the conextant runner using the control panel utility and can't see any other Belkin progs.

I have checked for other versions of autoexec.bat and config.sys

I have ones labeled .dos, .syd, .bak. All but .dos created this month ; 20th 21st 25th - at the time of the problem. They all look a lot like the sys and bat files. The dos was created in 2001 but was generated by macafee (rem line / path)

I have toyed with the idea of renaming the files but since we have remed out so much I can't see the point. I could try ren on the .dos file

Also I have looked for the ldl.com file in DOS and can't find it

Also for a long time I have been getting an error on boot the system.ini file looking for vsdata95.vxd and shlddrv.vxd. I have always hit the keys and the system has booted up OK. These file don't seem to exist and the system ini file has no line looking for them. In addition I have ren the system.--- to the system.ini and this has not helped. They look the same anyway

The Registry Restore is done from the MS-DOS command prompt.  Boot your system into DOS and type scanreg /restore  and press Enter  The utility will then start and allow you to revert to a previous Windows registry.   Pick a registry date prior to the installation of the card.

I tried doing a search on the Internet for the ldl.com file, but had to no luck.  Usually the more popular files are available for download somewhere.
