Continuous soft beeps from inside computer?

I have a dell studio xps 7100,  i figured i might as well ask this question here its been buggin me for a while i keep trying to do diff things to solve it.

when my pc is idle i can hear continous beeps coming from the computer.  Its hard to hear unless i stick my ear in the case.  Its not coming from the pc speakers or audio speakers.... They seem to be coming from either the gpu or underneath the gpu on the mobo...under the area where the two gpu power connectors plug into it.

Does this mean i have a heat problem,  voltage problem?  or is this just normal?   I have been noticing poor performance in games lately.   some of my games start to hitch after playing a while.  could it be too much heat from the gpu?  or is it a mobo heat problem?  i downloaded a temp monitoring software.  and from what i've read my temps are very reasonable.

For some reason turning off cool and quiet stops the beeps.   But they can occur again,  for example,  if i open up resource monitor from the task manager the beeping starts again!.  If i close resource monitor,  the beeping stops!    Why is that? what does this mean?    I never noticed this beep the first 2 years i had the pc.  it only happens in windows not in bios or dos.  maybe it is something to do with windows power management?  something probing in windows?  maybe its just a normal coil sound?

I should  add i recenlty updated my bios...thinking that would fix a problem i had rebooting the pc sometimes.  I then found it was because of firmware on the samsung hdd i have,  that i then updated fixing the reboot issue.  Could the bios have caused this beeping? I honestly can't remember if I updated the bios or before the beeping started.  I also recenlty have been opening the side of the case when gaming to cool the pc in case of heat problem.  even though my temps seem ok.

I also  recenlty bought a new psu thinking that would fix the problem,  since the fan on the old one was making noise i thought it best...but i still get the issue.

I also just ordered new  ram to see if that is the issue with my gaming.      but this strange beeping just  has me concerned.

I'm worried there is some problem with my pc.    I'm no longer under warranty since my two years is up so i can't ask a dell tech.  was hoping maybe some of you have heard of something like this.

Thanks for listening.

Rich.

ok so i might of figured it out.   all of a sudden i realized the beeps happened at the same time the hdd light blinked.

A little while ago I found out this had to with the autorun feature of windows.   which i have disabled which stopped the light from always blinking.  But I think maybe cause of this updated bios.  The light starts blinking again on every boot.  and if u open the case and listen inside the pc you can hear a beep at the exact same intervals and time the lights blinking.   I have to put a disc in the cd tray, wait for it to try and load, and then take it out.....and the light will stop blinking.

but i still hear the beep inside the pc case.   does the new bios have some sort of dsentry in it?  weird.  I wonder if this is whats causing my issues in games now as well.  I kind of wish i never upgraded it, i prolly only had to upgrade the firmware on the hdd.

is it possible to downgrade the bios back to the original one?

also apparenlty the beeping is always there even with cool n quiet off.  its just much quieter.    and apparenlty is just much louder when i open the resource monitor.   this is all crazy....does anyone have any thoughts?

i still would like to downgrade bios regardless,  cause i think this one might be giving me performance issues.  is that possible?

so the coil whine is still there.  but i found out that the the  blinking hdd light probing for a disc even after autorun is shut off,  starting again after every reboot had to do with updated chipset drivers i was using.  I rolled back to the original chipset drivers and no longer have that issue.

I also found out how to downgrade my bios back to the original.

download the dell bios from the site.

run the program....when it says it can't upgrade the bios,   because it is either the same or a previous version,  don't close it, leave it open.

go to your user/temp/bios directory.     or search foxawdwinflash   and open that directory.

copy all those files to a seperate directory.

then open command prompt and change to that directory.

type   afuwin /forceit

that should do the trick.  check bios version upon restart.

Sorry I didn't stay up all night to follow your thread. Anyway, did that fix the problem?

Hey Osprey its ok.   I sometimes get carried away.  :)

The coil whine is much quieter now.    I believe it has to do with the way it changes pitch or chirps when the cpu changes clock speeds and frequencies.  Maybe showing a little age now and prolly i started noticing it when i took the side of the case off.   but now its much quieter and totally inaudible with the case on.  I think it was louder with the bios and chipset drivers I was using, especially after coming out of sleep mode.

My issues with gaming though,  specifically battlefield 3 had to do with the fact i start hitching after gaming a while,  which seemed to be caused by the chatbox UI.  I originally thought it might be a heat or memory issue, but all my temps seem fine.  I just got the new 8gb memory and still have the problem. So that means none of the ram chips were slow performing.  I called EA and they said I should call my isp, suggesting that its possible they are throttling back on the port the chat box uses.   It seems these isps have really been suspicous especially after the whole pipa  and sopa issues.  Its crazy now how in this country of freedom,  we actually have websites that are only banned in the United States and nowhere else in the world.

MMO games depend on the internet especially and require alot of bandwith..    They also rely on memory and hdd speeds due to the constant loading of textures.  I have that spinpoint F3 samsung drive that had the urgent firmware upgrade.   Which i realized after i already updated my bios,  was the issue i was having sometimes not being able to restart windows.  I also replaced the cable  because i've had a couple ultra dma crc error count warnings on the smart data.  i do plan on getting an ssd drive for some games like bf3 and an mmo game I play.  don't think its nescessary for me to put the O/S on,  but that should make the hdd not an issue and i will just use it for office programs and media.

Spinrite 6 was not able to scan the drive,  supposedly due to a bad bios.  I dunno if thats truly the case or not.   I'm not going to bother scanning the drive again now that i downgraded because it takes too long.  and i don' have any major problems with the drive.   I've read some suggestions on using a diff dos to bootup with,  like using the usb key  i used for updating the hdd firmware,  instead of free dos that spinrite comes with.  Some say spinrite also doesn't like certain 1tb drives.  i think the drive is fine and like I said will be getting an ssd for some games anyways.

I also plan on adding new thermal paste to the gpu and checking for dust..  Alot of people have suggested I do this....even though the gpu temp reading is fine....its a boxed gpu and possible dust has collected in some areas.  Its been over 2 years and i'm in a dusty and very hot room and i do alot of gaming.

The cpu still seems to be running cool.  The only other thing i notice is the temp on my NB is hot at idle.  65 degrees.   it seems at full load it actually goes down to 54 degrees.  When touching the heatsink these temps seem correct.  Which is strange, maybe due to more air flow?  I know most manufacturers say the temps of the NB chip can go to 100 degrees.  but it still seems odd... and I wonder if it is normal for this board.  or maybe i should put some paste on there too?   Do you know if this is normal temp readings?

Thank you for listening and letting me post on these forums.  The computer has never crashed on me once yet...and is still running good.

Rich.

yes i have fios.    you know what i'm thinking now.  maybe my phenom II 820 is just badly bottlenecking my 5870 in these new games.  I should of done more research when customizing this pc.

I'm looking at the phenom II x4 965  cpu     It benches better in games then the 1090t!!   and way way cheaper.  in fact i can get it for 70 bucks!

I assume i can put it in the dell board right?

Rich,

Ok, so you've answered a few of my questions, like have you checked the sound with the side of the case off. I take it those temps are °C? Seem ok. And I suppose you've checked for dust.

I don't know where you are in the country. Is FIOS an ISP option for you? My gamer son swears by the speeds and low latency.

Yes, that should help.
