Cooling fan

Hi there and this is my first time on here. I have a Dell 4600 and have had it for 6 months and it is great. The only thing is, is that if I leave it switched on, standing for a time without it doing anything, it locks up.
My eldest son seems to think it is a cooling problem. If it is, can anyone recommend a fan or cooling system that I can fit without to many problems?
Yuors sincerely

If the fan isn't working, call Dell - you're under warranty and they'll send you a no-charge replacement.

You cannot use an aftermarket fan without generating "cooling failure" errors - you must use an OEM fan.

That's not exactly true, there is a way to disable the fan alarm and install an after-market fan (my son has done this for his 4550). That said, I would never do this for a system still within the warranty period.

I'm skeptical that your problem is related to over-heating. I would take a close look at your background and startup programs/applications and see if there is anything that could be eliminated.

Also, have you done a dust clean up lately ?  It might have dust inside that will increase the heat.

Agree that this is probably "not" a cooling fan issue.

Agree with the "startup" issue.  If you know how to use "msconfig", try disableing all and see if that helps.  Also, make sure you stay on top of virus definition files and spyware removal tools.

Highly recommend "SpyBot - Search and Destroy".  It's free and does an excellent job.
