Let me guess....you have Word as part of Works Suite. In that situation, the wonderful folks at Microsoft have decided that launching Word will clear the clipboard, hence what you copied is banished to memory purgatory forever and you are forced to recopy to allow the paste. If it really hinders your efficiency you can remedy it by going to the add/remove programs in the Contol Panel and removing the Works Suite add-in for Word. (Or install one of the many 3rd party enhanced clipboard programs.)

Fantastic:

I’m so new to this computer stuff and continually amazed at people like yourself who are so knowledgeable.

Your guess was right on the $$$$ and I would prefer your second recommendation.
If I can indulge you for some more advice….any suggestions where I could find an enhanced clipboard program and what would be the correct procedure for installing it. I get nervous about removing things. I have learned that when one installs programs, Norton along with any other programs should be off.

Thanks again….appreciate your response.

Bergie1939,

There are links to three shareware clipboard replacements here. If you'd like to take the easy solution and simply remove the Word in Works add-in, the instructions for doing so are halfway down the page here.

Here is the fix for this very annoying problem, which I'm posting two months after the question was asked for anyone still searching the archives:

In the root directory, Program Files\Microsoft Works, delete the wkwdaddn.dll file.

Now Word can paste whether or not it was open before copying. I have not found any other problems caused by this solution.

Hey thanks, that is neat.

That is so simple and fast.

I just changed the file name by adding x. Just in case.
