CPU Fan Installation

I'm finding the same fan noise problem on my 8200 as the other users. The NMB fan was replaced once and still makes loud noise when the ambient temperture >25C. It appears that there is a control which tells the fan how fast to turn.

I took the fan out today hoping to replace it with other quieter fan. I was surprised that the fan is actually sucking air from CPU as supposed to blowing air to it. Is this the proper installation or is there something wrong?

That's the way they're designed to work. They pull the cooler air in the front, across the components and the heated air is blown out the back. The cowl is there to make sure the air travels across the heatsinks and the processor. This is the same way a window fan should be used in a house.

Hi, I had the same problem, the fan (a newer one, installed backwards by the tech guy) was sucking air from the CPU out, but it is not designed for this, at least the 8200. The fam is the ONLY fan blowing cool air into the system, and onto the heatsink/processor. It shold be blowing cool air onto/into the processor/computer, I called Dell and they verified this. Plus, the temperature sensor on the fan that determins rotation speed if the comp gets too hot would have been facing the outside of the system, not reading the internal heat correctly. My computer (8200) runs much quieter and faster now that it is cooler. I had the same question a while back as well. SWITCH THE FAN AROUND.

I noticed that all of the Dell desktops in my office also have air blowing out to the outside. I suspect like the first email response said, it is intended to be this way.

Make sure it is not the powersupply fan located right above the intake fan. The power supply blows out hot air, in intake blows cool air into/onto the heatsink and processor.
