cpu running 100% constant..

I'm typing this after a fresh install of xp home with no updates and no software reinstalls.  i have only gone to 2 websites so far.  Before I reinstalled, the task manager showed the cpu at 100%.  After reinstall, no change.  The system process is running at 50-99% all the time.  Not sure what to do next.  Gonna update xp now.   Thanks.

Run the 32 big diags on the system from the Resource CD or Drivers and Utility CD that came with the system ( or download it). That will determine where the problem is going to lie.

This should be fairly easy to pin-point. When the CPU is at 100%, right-click on the task bar and bring up the Task Manager.  Click the "Processes" tab and  double-click the CPU TIME column. This will sort the processes according to who is using the most CPU. You should see something listed within the first 1-3 lines that is hogging the CPU.  Report back what you find.

If for some reason you do not have a "CPU Time" colum, go to View -> Select Column and click the box next to "CPU Time".

Are you running a Microsoft Office suite or program? If so you may want to check there.

The number one process is "System".  Uses anywhere from 50-99% all the time.  Now I've noticed that when I first start up, everything is fine.  Then when I go play a game such as sof2, it begins almost immediately.  During game play, everything looks good except hesistation.  Lag.

rschmitt, yes I like to run works calender from microsoft office.  But at this moment it is not installed due to reinstall of XP.

you can try running process explorer. http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml

It will break down everything in the system process and tell you exactly what is using it up. It's usually a driver causing it.

Well, I ran process explorer and found these under System Idle Process: Hardware Interrupts, DPCs and System.  The most usage bounces back and forth between DPCs and System.  Now in properties under System I find these:

ACPI.sys+0x10b10 at most usage

ntoskml.exe!ExQueueWorkItem+0x2f secondly

Do these help?

Doesn't ring a bell but try changing your power scheme to always on.

Just wanted to update.  I went into bios for the millionth time and went into event log and saw the message "cpu overtemp".  I had the green shroud off all this time and have put it back on.  No probs now for three days.  Thanks for your attention.
