Darned keyboard driver

Hi all. I own and am happy with an old dell 8300. My friend has a gateway desktop (gateway cust support site is awful), that he had moved into an entertainment center and asked me to hook it up again for him. He is runing XP and no matter what I try, I cannot get the simple keyboard driver to install. Device driver, add hardware, etc. insist they cannot locate the necessary driver for the keyboard that has been installed and used, then simply unplugged and moved. Help?
