You're describing a crossover cable - an ethernet cable with a pair of wires crossed so one end of the chain knows where the other end is.

Sseaott,

Your Dimension will come with Windows XP installed. XP includes the software you need for your data transfer, called Files and Settings Transfer Wizard. When you get the computer, go to Start|All Programs|Accessories|System Tools|Files and Settings Transfer Wizard. You will need a null modem serial cable to connect the two computers, or you can connect them in a network configuration if both have network interface cards.

if you are transfering from an old XP system to an new one using XP Media Center Edition,...
......BEWARE!!!!!

i have a new dimension8300 with the Media Center Edition, (MCE), and was transfering files
from my old system which has the old regular XPpro OS...........................
transfering using the files and setting transfer wizzard should not be done in this case...

although it seems to work fine at first, soon you will find that the new MCE OS will begin
assigning folder types, (photo, music, and video), as well as thumb-nail pictures randomly
to any folder it wants to..............................

i set up my new system to my old system using a cross-over cable to transfer all my old data
to my new system, but because it was from XP to the XP MCE, the dll files are different
 and do not transfer seamlessly......................

i was told that any file transfers should be done with a CD, and to make sure all folder
type assignments are removed, (which can be done through the customize tab on each
individual folder's properties window).............. otherwise all will be a mess, and the
only way to fix it is to re-format the hard drive and reinstall the entire OS and the
other dell CD's one at a time.......which is a total pain, as i have had to do it twice so
far after only 60 days of having the thing in my house...................... since things
messed up initially during my first 30-day return period, i was sent a new hard-drive from
dell, but my problems are many since that time as well, although different..........

the senior tech i spoke with said that eventually micorsoft should come up with a
patch/upgrade/fix to address the problem, but untill then to only use the home network
cable to run the modem connection from my old system, and to not transfer any files using
the cable................................ i can only transfer from there to here using a
floppy, or a CD, or a memory key which seems to work fine as long as i am absolutely
certain i have removed any of those folder type assignments first.........................
otherwise i will mess everything up and will have to re-format for a third time..........
...... which i really do not want to have to do, so untill i see the patch/update, i will
not connect the cable network for fear of messing it all up.............................

as far as transfering from Xp to Xp the crossover cable is the answer, and is really very
simple by setting up a home network using the network set-up wizzard in the
accessories/communication folder from the all programs start list....................

but if you are moving from any other system to the new one, i would be very careful.......
....... especially if you have opted for the new Media Center Edition of XPpro...........
 then as i said.................BEWARE!!!!!!!
