defrag doesnt defrag?

I've only been on PCs for a little over a year. Mac man all my life, so I don't know much, as witnessed by my putting myself in the "other/don't know" category. But I do know what solved the exact same problem for me simply and easily - close all the task tray apps that you or your kids stuck down there like their jukebox and chat rooms, etc.

Mine never went past 1% and scheduled maint. would keep defrag going forever. Closing them, defragging, rebooting solved the problem.

P.S. - A Mac doesn't include this "feature" - grin!

Boot into safe mode run ScanDisk first, then run the Defrag. utility. It will run unaffected in safe mode. JD

I just had the same problem. Solution: you have a program running in the background. Defrag is trying to get past it and can't. You have to go to Start, Run, then type in msconfig.exe. (or start-up). When you get there you have to try & figure out what program is running in the background. Can't help you with that. Process of elimination. Mine was my NikonView. I had to uncheck it, went back to defrag, and it started defraging. Good Luck

thankyou everyone for the advise . I have nikon view4 installed and that is the problem... in fact it is giving me all sorts of problems and I still can't load my pictures to the computer. Alot of good the camera is if I cant too that. Kcmelo, what kind of camera do you have? Lynn I have a coolpix 775.
