DEFRAGMENT? HELP!

I have been trying to defragment my coumputer now, several times (5 to be exact) and the usual box apperears which states that the defragmenting is taking place, but the "precent done" portion remains at zero. Then when I check the "details" it shows the regular "details" box but it remains empty and at zero. I have let it run this way for over an hour to see if it just needed "more time". Futhermore, I have rebooted and shut down my computer as well, the problem still continued. I have defragmented my computer sevral times before and have never experienced this problem. While in the computers troubleshooting section I "scaned disks for errors" as the computer told me and the "percent done" bar only aquired two blocks and then stopped. I would greatly appreciate your assistance on this matter. I have Windos Millenium. Thank You...

Try restarting computer in Safe Mode and run Defrag.

Hi,

While running Defrag from SafeMode is fine, you should always run ScanDisk prior to doing Defrag to fix any problems first. I recommend using the routine outlined below for doing system maintance.

Steve

Steps for running ScanDisk & Disk Defragmenter

1. Run Disk Cleanup Tool by: Start > Programs > Accessories > System tools > Disk Cleanup.
2. Make sure that your C: drive (letter for Harddrive) is listed and click ok.
3. Put check marks in box for Temporary Internet Files, Temporary Files & Recycle Bin then click ok, are you sure > yes.
4. Right Click > exit your Anti Virus & FireWall from Systray icon.
5. Do Ctrl-Alt-Delete to bring up Close Programs box.
6. Highlight line and click end task.
7. Continue to do this until all are gone except Explorer & Systray.
8. When these two are the only ones left, Click cancel to close box.
9. Clean out Windows Temp folder.
10. Double Click My Computer > DC Harddrive icon > DC Windows Folder > DC Temp Folder > Edit > Select All > File > Delete > return to desktop.
11. Turn off screensaver & set monitor turn off to never.
12. Right click on desktop > Properties > Screensaver > energy savings setting > set to never > Apply > ok > set screensaver to none > Apply > Ok
