Hi!!

The quickest thing would be to run a repare on your windows.

NOTE: you need windows xp operating system cd for that.

( Steps repair in windows XP )

  1. Insert the Windows XP operating system cd in the drive.
  2. The cd will auto run.
  3. Press space bar to boot from CD.
  4. Now the  setup will test the hardware, and load the files.
  5. Once the Welcome to Setup screen will appear, select the second option (  To Repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, Press R.
  6. Now select the windows. If there is only on windows is installed on the system, then type 1 and hit on the enter button.
  7. Now enter your Admin password. By default it is created blank so just press Enter.
  8.  Now type chkdsk /r, and hit on the enter button

albertn2005,

In addition to what Alan-James & x_lab rat have written you may need to run System File Checker if chkdsk fails to cure the problem. To do this you'll need a Windows XP CD containing the same service pack that's currently installed on your hard drive. If your system didn't ship with OS media you can use the form here to have Dell ship you one for free. Note that the disc will be the exact same version of Windows that came on your system when you got it (including service pack).

Open command prompt.  Type chkdsk /r, enter.  It will tell/ask if you want to run chkdsk /r on next startup, say yes/y.  Start/shutdown/restart and chkdsk /r will run.  It can't run under windows, as the files it accesses are in use.

If that doesn't fix it, repost in the software forum.  It's not a hardware issue.

or you could make things much easier for yourself by downloading and installing a superior defrag utility.

i use this on my personal machines and all the workstations i regularly service.  plus it is free.

You mean, Dell doesn't consider Europe one market for purposes of support? And Dell Spain won't recognize your UK ownership?  EU is supposed to be treated as one region, for purposes of commerce and relocation.  Anyone know?  Have you tried it?

Why not just replace the defragger, as suggested above?
