Dell 670 Precision Processor Problem.

I have a precision 670 and it currently has Dual 3.0/1M/800 processors, I purchased 2 SL8MA 2.8/4M/800 Dual Core processors because this is the cpu my work Dell 670 computer has and when I put one or both the processors, I get the following error.

Alert! Incompatible Processor Detected.
System Halted

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Windows(64Bit) XP Pro / 8GB Ram / 73GB SCSI HD.

Thanks in Advance!

I had to purchase a new motherboard, there are 2 distinct differences in the motherboards DELL puts in the 670, on supports the paxville sl8ma, the other does not.  Once I got the new motherboard, everything worked fine.

Have you updated your BIOS to the most recent version? I've read of others who have made these CPUs work with the 670 but my understanding is you must use the most up to date BIOS to make it happen.

Thanks for the update. I found the threads discussing the 670 motherboard issue after I posted my reply. I've got a Precision 470 and was thinking of doing the same mod, but I'm finding that  people come across the incompatible CPU error message as well with the SL8MA. I'm sure there might be a similar fix (i.e. get a newer rendition of the motherboard), but I've yet to see what that motherboard is. I hope someone else figures that out because I've been the guinea pig in the past and it's not cheap!

Just an update for the forums, this is to confirm that the Precision 470 can run the SL8MA CPU (Xeon, dual core) with the XC838/0XC838 motherboard. I just got my processors today and the board the other day. Fired up right away with no issues and recognized by the A07 BIOS. Noticeably faster than previous (replaced two 3.2 Ghz single core Xeons).

Sweet upgrade. :emotion-2:
