Dell BIOS hack and/or mod

O.K. Dell's BIOS is a tough nut to crack but I'm handy w/ a soldering iron. ;)

Has anyone ever heard of replacing the offending chip/chips(EEPROM's) with the standard(in my case, Intel) EEPROM available for the retail version motherboard ????
Finding a "proper" BIOS from Phoenix? would be next.
Is my thinking all wrong? If so, why?
It really gripes me that I cannot tweak my PAID FOR, OUT of WARRANTY system the way I see fit!

I'm fairly certain there must be others out there who feel the same way

I'm sure it's been done before (there are a lot of dells sold) but it's obviously a risky procedure. Before doing that I would try to force flash to "retail" bios onto the current chips. Worse case you're going to try to replace them anyway -- though I suppose it could leave you with nothing to go back to. It's definitely a lot easier to try that than removing and replacing the chips but I guess it depends how much you care about breaking it.

Ooops.
Totally forgot about this post. I've been spending most of my time in the gaming section.
NemesisDB thanks for the reply.
I originally posted this question in the gaming section. Don't ask me why? I am rethinking that now, I guess I'm just new.
If you want a good laugh, search out some/all of my posts in the gaming forum, especially the "BIOS hack/mod" post.
I've been strugglin' to say the least....
Anyway, I KNOW it's a crazy idea, but I've had a wild hair...you know where, to try a hardware work around to the Dell BIOS limitations.
I can't be alone in this, but despited endless searching I've come up with nothing.
Flashing is totally ineffective.
The reason is because of a "boot block" portion of the EEPROM itself.
This boot block runs first and is NOT updateable by flashing.
This code verifies that the rest of the BIOS is intact before jumping to it.
Ingenius huh, at least DELL really thinks so LOL hahaha
Just thinking about this again gets me all worked up.
I'm tellin' ya. I'm close, and w/ a little more time.....

wasn't aware of the block. some older dells could be crossed flashed but that ability may well be gone.

something else to keep in mind is that if you reinstall your dell OS after the modification it will not activate without a call to MS.

edit: what computer are you trying to do this on?

Dell 8400, has Intel/Dell
model 0U7077 mobo
haven't opened it up and looked at the chips yet.
If I don't go out of town this weekend, I plan on installing new Raptors in RAID 0.
Will take a closer look then.

Any ideas?

*edit* Well aware of the BIOS/OS validation check upon bootup. got that covered ;)
