I'm interested in this problem, since I, too, have had this occur with great frequency at anytime other than first thing in the morning. I live on the east coast of the U.S., so it seems that as long as the midwest and western U.S. is still asleep, I can connect to Dell Chat. But, forget about trying to connect midday or later -- I just get the same message as you do.
Curiously, this doesn't seem to be a widespread issue. I'm using IE7 and I updated my brand-new XPS M1530's installation of Java to the latest version. That didn't help get rid of the problem, however.

Just got that error 5 times in a row. Doesn't really matter though because Dell "customer support" is absolutely garbage. I've been after these guys for HOURS about my video card failure on my M1330. http://en.community.dell.com/blogs/direct2dell/archive/2008/09/12/nvidia-gpu-update-limited-warranty-enhancement-details.aspx

Any ideas? Thanks.
