Sorry about that,

Question, has anyone been able to get any of the Pentium D 9xxx to work. I just ordered the D945, 3.4 ghz and was told that it would work in my box, but after reading all the post, I'm a little nervous about getting it, considering Newegg charges a 15% restocking fee.

My current bios is A05.

Second, anyone know if any new bios versions will be coming out?

Hey, you dont have to worry about newegg will charge you 15% restocking fee. Just talk to their support agents, and say the box have not been opened, and they won't charge you a dime.

please do. again I think we only have confirmation of the 8xx series working -- so if you get it to boot I'm sure the confirmation would make a lot of people happy.

I have a Pentium D 840 chip that I bought "new" i guess from eBay.  I installed it and got a amber light, in which the computer power up automatically.  I have a Dimension 5150 with the Intel 945G chipset and thought it was compatable.  Is there a limit to which 800 chip you can use??

Also, I was looking at the intel website for the 945G express chipset, and supposely, it supports "all" D8xx series of processors and as well as the D9xx series.

Quection mlopez, your 5150, is it the E510 or the 5150(the skinny case).

The reason I ask is that everytime i call support and give them my service tag, they refer to it as the 5150. But if you go to dell website, click on support -> service manuals. I notice that they have a manual each for the 5150 and the e510, but why, what is the difference. Now, maybe the have the same motherboard, but I dont know why they always refer to mine as the 5150 when it says on the front of the case that it is the E510.

Also, what is your Bios version?

Well, the verdict is in. my processor was waiting at home when I got off work. Have to tell you, I was nervous that it was not going to work at all. I have been reading all the post about the E510's and the luck that some people had or havent had with upgrading processors.

Here's a little background.

Bought the E510 from Dell about one month ago which came witht the D820 processor, the 2.8ghz and 1 gig or ram. Since then, I added and addiditional 1 gig of ram bringing me to a total of 2 gigs.  Also, it came with bios A05.

Also, upgraded the video card to a ATI Radeo x1900GT card with 256mb DDR3 ram. Got it from Bestbuy about 2 weeks ago when they had a One week price cut of 70 dollars, bringing it to a total of only 300 dollars, average deal. Sometimes wish I could have waited to get the ATI X1900 xtx card with 512 ram, but just way too expensive.

Plus since I had to upgrade the video card, the power supply that came with the E510 was a 305 watt, the video card required atleast a 400 watt, so I swaped out the original and placed in a spare that i had, total of 500 watts, only thing i had to do was to buy a 20 pin connector to a 24 pin connector.

So thats the background.

Last night I installed the new processor, could not use the fan that the processor came with, because of the way the motherboard is, just not compatiable. Swapping it out was easy. This was the first LGA775 processor that i have removed and replace so far, and was kinda startled when it made a loud clicking noise when I placed the new processor in, but I guess that is normal.

But when I powered it on, all was normal. I though I would get a bios notification that the processor has changed, like when I installed an addiditional 1 gig of ram, I got an alert saying the memory has changed. But no such alert after swapping out the processor.

Only notification i got was after it booted up and I was logged in, I got that "found new hardware" at the bottom of the right hand screen saying it found the new processor.

Results:

The first thing i noticed after swapping out my D 820 processor with the D945 processor was the pre boot time and the loggin in of the OS. That was honestly fast, not lying here folks. With my original processor, log in times was around anywhere between 20 -40 seconds, after the new processor, about 7-10 seconds, extremely fast, i was honeslty amazed!

Other than that, have seen a great deal in performance when I run my apps and the boot up time of them, Dreamweaver, Flight sim 2004, etc, etc....

So everthing when fine, i was really nervous to say, like i said before, it seems that some people in here have had some luck, while others can't get it to work at all.

I'm also amazed because the reason i went with the D945 is that I called the Dimesion support telephone number, and had the guy look up my model number and find out what was the highest avaiable proccesor that could be upgraded to. Took him a while to find out, at first, he was telling me that only the 5xx and the 6xx pentium 4 processors were the only ones allowed, but i had to straighten him out telling him i bought it pre-installed with the D820 processor. But after ten minuted, he was able to tell me that the highest avaiable processor was the D945.

So there you go folks, for once, dell support actually knew what they were talking about, "just not at first"!!

If there is a way to put some pictures on here showing the processor upgrade, please let me know and i will post them.

yeah your right...

I did get my through the dell epp flyer from where i work at, which turned out to be a great deal, so I guess thats why they refer to it as the E510.

Jluke, I was under the impression that they (the e510 and the 5150) were the same machine -- one sold on the small business site, one on the home site. Believe the "skinny" one you're thinking of is the 5150c

The Dell I have is the Dimension 5150 tower, sold in the small business section of dell. com I have the new "A05" bios that i updated to. According to all the specs, my Dell 5150 should be compatable with the D chip, but supposedly not mine. The Intel 945G chipset is also in my 5150
