Dell optical USB mouse scroll wheel button function

This probably isn't specific to a Dimension computer.  But, all I'd like to do is change the function of the scroll wheel button and that option isn't available under the mouse properties.  You can only change the function of the left-right buttons, or the number of lines to scroll.  With the MS Intellimouse, you can make the scroll wheel button do any of a number of functions.  I tried installing the MS Intellimouse 6.1 version, but it won't work with Dell's optical USB mouse.  Having the button allow you to scroll by moving the mouse is kind of useless.  Being able to minimize an active screen would be nice though.  Anyone have any ideas versus buying a new mouse for such a rather minor improvement in function would be nice?

The version I tried was actually 5.0 but Vista gave me the what seems to be very common "non-compatible" response.  I've got a 3.2v and a 4.0v so I'll try those too using the compatibility wizard.  Maybe that will work.  Thanks

One of the reasons I use Logitec. Strange Intellimouse did not work, I have used it in the past with generic mice with no problems, maybe try an older version of intellimouse.

Vista won't load any version even with the compatibility wizard except 6.1.  It loaded but gave me a pop-up saying that it won't work unless I use a MS mouse.  Fancy that!  Oh well, so much for bleeding edge technology!   lol

Try win98 compatibility mode, some have reported this works when XP does not.
