DELL OptiPlex GX270 Problem: Boot Error PXE-E61

DELL OptiPlex GX270 running XP SP3

When booting it boots to a screen:

Intel Boot Agent GE v1.z.05P1
Initializing and Establishing Link...

PXE-E61: Media Test Failure, Check Cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel Boot Agent

It then goes to the Safe Mode Screen:

...  A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.

Then gives the Safe Mode Options:

Safe Mode
Safe Mode
Safe Mode
Last Known Good Config.
Start Windows

Which ever one I chose the second ticker stops and nothing happens.  It won't respond to anything I do.

I know there are several different GX270's and I really don't know how best to describe which it is.  It is small, uses PCI Half cards (I "think" they're referred to as PCI Half cards) has a floopy, a DVD Multi Recorder and can lay flat or has a stand to stand upright.

The 4 TEST Lights are green, but do blink yellow to green in various sequences at boot (Which I suspect they should.)

There are NO beeps!

Did you check the cables to the hard drive?

Power off, unplug and press/hold power button on tower for ~15 sec. Open the case and carefully disconnect the cables from the hard drive and reconnect them. Then do the same thing with the hard drive cable at the motherboard end.

Hi Ron - thank you for your quick answer!

I did as you request previously, with no cure!  I did it again now and still no cure.

I also noticed that the computer is now powering on and trying to boot itself, and that the fan is running louder than on my other OptiPlex GX270 which are configured exactly the same.

The difference is the one that is working fine runs 24/7 and is always on the internet and the one that has failed is on only when needed and rarely is allowed to access the internet, only to update software.

Thank you

Your system is trying to boot from a network, is this correct?

Is your hdd seen in bios?

Agree with above, are you trying to boot from the network? You can disable the PXE boot option in the bios under intergrated network if not (i think that is what the option is called).
