Dell Studio 540 processor upgrade
I own a Dell Studio 540 Desktop[ black] and the processor that came with it is Intel Core 2 Quad 6600, 2,4GHZ. This one is produced at 65nm.
I want to upgrade the processor with the fastest Quadcore, Q9650, which is produced at 45nm. Will this processor work on my socket 775 board?
I have the latest BIOS, 1.13.

Yes, the Yorkfield Quad Core Q9650, 3.00GHz, 12MB, 1333FSB, is supported by the Inspiron 540 MT.

I think you will be disappointed with any performance increase that you may or may not notice based on the cost of the Q9650. These CPUs are way too much money for older tech and not worth it if you already have a Q6600. I would never upgrade from the Q6600 unless I had to based on cost. You can get the i7's for less even though they don't work on your motherboard.

I have a studio 540 with the Q8200/2.33GHz processor. I want to use the box for a virtual server but the chip doesn't support it. Is there a chip for the 540 which supports ESXi or Hyper-V virtualization? If so, which one? The other side of the question is if I would be better off in the long term price and performance-wise going with a new i7 system.

For my money? I'd get a new system with an i7, but ...
For VT-x (what is normally considered for virtualization), you would need a Q8400, Q6xxx or Q9xxx processor ... and only the Q9xxx support VT-d. Given the prices of those processors, I'd say you're better off putting a little more money into a new system.
ESXi 3.5 will run on a system without VT - not well, but it will run.
