Dell Technical Update Subscriptions

I did sign up for the Dell Technical Update Subscriptions but find that it hasn't been much help. The last one received was : Communications: Dell Wireless 5500 Cingular Mobile Broadband 3G HSDPA MiniCard, Wireless 5510 Cingular Mobile Broadband (3G HSDPA) Express card, Wireless 5520 Cingular Mobile Broadband (3G HSDPA) MiniCard, Utility, Multi OS, English, Multi System, v.2.06.03.052, A05Criticality: UrgentRelease Date: 4/10/2009 12:00:00 AMDescription: Installs OK on the Win7 OS The problem is that there is no indication of what Model prompted the message. In this case numerically more likely a laptop but there are desktops with external USB wireless NICs. Dell recommends when signing up to use the service tag. However, unless they put the service tag or at least the model number in the email, the notification emails are not much help. When I talk to technical support I was told to ignore the notification emails. That if I have a problem, then I search for updates and install them. That didn't seem like a good answer. Where can one go to complain about the lack of model/service tage information in the notification email? My work around is to create a separate model email account for each model so that if I get a notication email I will now know the model involved. Hi techcoor,

I got minimal usefulness (but maximum confusion) from the Tech Updates notifications, too.

I wish they could scan the computer to see which updates I need -- or might want -- and then offer them with better descriptions than they're now offering.

Also, I suspect some of the notifications are duplicated by Microsoft Updates, but the Dell descriptions are so cryptic, I can't confirm that.
