To isolate the issue between the computer, Bluetooth Adapter and Bluetooth Mouse, I suggest you to try the below mentioned steps:
Please try pairing any other Bluetooth device (mobile or Bluetooth headsets if available) with the computer and check the functionality of the Bluetooth Adapter. This will helps to check if Bluetooth Adapter is working fine.
Try to connect and use the Bluetooth Adapter and Bluetooth Mouse with a different system and check if the Bluetooth Mouse works.
If a different Bluetooth Adapter is available, try to pair it with the Bluetooth Mouse and check if that combination works.
Also, I suggest you to purchase a paired Bluetooth mouse and Nano receiver like this one: http://amzn.to/12jicak

I've managed to fix the problem.
There's a blue button on the bottom of the mouse. Once I had pressed this, it paired with the adaptor. The muse is now working perfectly.
Thank you for taking the time to advise me on this issue.
