diagnostic test
i have tried running the diagnostic test, which says will take ten minutes, twice. the first time, it stayed stuck on "obtaining selected diagnostics" for three hours. this time, it has been an hour and a half so far.
is there a rational reason for this? i have several problems that i would like to fix

do you mean the web based diagnostics or the boot time diagnostics? if its the web based i had similar problems with it. youl end up having to disable your antivirus and youl need to download and run dell system detect http://www.dell.com/support/troubleshooting/us/en/19/KCS/KcsArticles/ArticleView?docid=576402 for what ever reason i needed to run it manually to get the web tests to work.
all so note that unless they fixed it it will say you have a cd/dvd rom error. if you dont have a disk in the drive it cant do the spindle check, and yet if you do have a disk in the drive it cant perform other checks. so either way it errors out.

Install Dotnet 4.0 , then install all windows updates. And try again.

it should be fine, i was just giving you a heads up that the cd/dvd will probably give a false error. do as speedstep recommended and install .net, when i double click i get a box in the top left for a few seconds then the diagnostics do there thing. if your sure your externals are fine and want to speed it up a bit you can unhook those before starting. as for the a/v you might not need to disable it, the only reason i needed to is it had a hissy fit when the diagnostics tried to access my external hard drive.

i meant the web based diagnostics. i did download the system detect, but, i haven't been able to open it. when i do, i get the box for "run", but after that, there is absolutely nothing.
i'm not keen on disabling my av, but, i'll think about it, i guess. i don't know, from your experience, if it is worth it. i not only have the dvd drive, i have an external dvd drive, and an external hard drive. is that going to drive it nuts?

i just discovered that the dell detect is apparently in. i have a little icon on the icon bar on the right bottom of my screen.
truthfully, i don't understand my problem. it is basically, i have no problem on some sites. my email works just as it always has, for example. however, i am on a lot of pro boards forums, and, now, it is taking up to two minutes to change pages there, and a lot of things are not there, smilies for example.
i can go to google perfectly fine, but, when i click on a site that i want to go to, the little circle in the tab is the black one going counter clockwise, for a couple of minutes, then popping up with something stupid like, "the connection was reset", "page not found", when i know for certain that it is there, and so forth.
on some places, i get that when i click on a link.
here, i went to the microsoft site in your link just fine, but there is no download button showing.
also, i have comcast cable, and they have the silly little "easy solve". when i run that, it says that i'm not connected to the internet. of course, i am, and the little icon down there in the bar shows that i am on network five, local and internet. i used to be on network three, whatever it is.
i'm wondering if, since you apparently are a firefox fan, you would know if the problem is firefox.
