Dialog Boxes

I was on my PC last night and i did not have any problems. Now i get on this morning and my Dialog Boxes are huge. Ex. Desktop Properties, Windows Password Screen, Internet Connection Dialup Screen, Add/Remove Programs. I tried to change my screen size, desktop theme and restarted 5 times but nothing is helping. I ran the Dell Resolution assistance and it says that there is nothing wrong.

Paco,

It would be helpful to know what your Display Properties settings are. Right click on an empty spot on your desktop and choose properties. In the dialog box, click settings. Hopefully you will be able to see what it says for Screen Area, for example 800 x 600, or 1024 x 768, or 720 x 480, or 640 x 480. Since I do not know what your correct setting ought to be, that might be a good place to start.

Slide the slider to what you imagine your correct settings ought to be, for example: 800 x 600. Then click "Apply". A dialog window will appear that informs you that Windows is resizing your desktop, and that you should wait. Click "OK" and the process will begin. The next dialog box asks you if you want to keep the setting. If you want what you are looking at, you should click "yes", if not Windows will return you to the last setting (before you began with the slider).

If you have tried all of the above already (and if you are experiencing an undesired screen size), then perhaps you have altered your font/text size in the Advanced settings. I know from my own personal experience that if you attempt to change the font, you will be given a warning from Microsoft that "some programs may not work correctly if you proceed."

Heed that warning: it will lead to exactly what you are experiencing in enlarged dialog boxes.

After experimenting with small, then large, and finally other in the Advanced settings, I was warned. My only recovery--after ignoring the warning--was to perform a scanreg /restore. (*note: in scanreg /restore there is a space between the g and the /.)

Am I correct in understanding that you made absolutely no changes to your computer last night? And that when you reawakened, your computer dialog boxes had changed by themselves? If this is the case, then I would:
  1. run a virus scan
  2. do a complete maintenance: disk scan, defrag
  3. and clear all cookies.
I would also turn off the Science Theme, and select none instead.

Then I would check System File Checker to see if any files had been corrupted. After that--if everything remainded unacceptable--then I would perform a scanreg /restore to a previous date, for example the day before yesterday when everything apparently worked correctly.

.
