Dimension 2300 - programs slow down
I have a Dimension 2300 running on Windows XP Home. Periodically, programs will run sluggishly to the point that just a white screen will appear and perhaps either the systems crashes or the program recovers. Would formatting the disk and restalling windows XP home solve the problem?
Thanks,
Noreen

Have you added any new software or hardware lately that may cause the issue? Have you scanned for a possible virus infection? Viruses also causes systems to slow down. Also, is there an unusual noise coming from your hard drive? A bad hard drive nay cause a system's performance to flunk.
Also, try this links from Dell Support to help fix your system slow issue.

Noreen,
Did this problem just appear in the last few days? If so, see the following:
http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,110385,00.asp
The solution for now is to use Control Panel - Add-Remove programs to uninstall the 811493 securtiy update.

Try this while in Recovery Console:
chkdsk c: /p /r
Or, you may try running MSCONFIG and disable startup items. One or more programs running on the background may be causing the problems.

rustymt,
Yes, I have it installed and haven't noticed any slowdown effects. According to the MS newsgroups, the problem seems to be a conflict between the update and certain running configurations of antivirus software, but nothing is clear as to the exact cause and it is therefore unclear as to how many computers are affected. Fortunately, this in one of the updates that can be removed in Add/Remove programs, so if it does bite you, it's easy to fix.

There are 4 icons: setup wizard, LAN connection, pervasive engine for Maximizer and volume.
Possible future problems?
Thanks, Noreen

Hi noreen
Glad you have your computer running better. Just curious, how many icons do you have running down in the bar by your (clock) time.
