dimension 3000 disk read error occurred

can you provide the complete error message? What OS is teh system running. When does the message appear?

windows xp.

error says:  loading pbr for descriptor 2...done

a disk error occurred.  press control, alt, delete to restart.

I tried to press f8 on restart, but no response.  I was able to press f2 and f12 and did do a test.   when it was testing ide disk, the error code came up of99:1344

message: block 92869

uncorrectable data error or media is write protected.

The hard drive has failed, you need to replace it, if you have a warranty, contact Dell Technical Support for a replacement, give the Techie the error message.

No warranty, buy a 3.5", 7200rpm IDE hard drive, you can purchase this from most local and online computer stores.

After replacing the HD, you will need to reinstall XP, drivers and applications.

thanks bev.  that's all i needed to know.  i didn't want to buy the hd if it wasn't going to fix the problem.
