Dimension 3000 Graphics card help please

Hi to all

Can someone kindly advise ive just given my little lad my dell dimenson 3000 pc, it was fine for me as i didn't really play games.

Its has 1.5GB of memory and processor is showing as 2.6GHz unfortuantly the game he is trying to play is only a train simulator game but it keeps jumping, so presume the on board graphics isn't upto the job.

Can someone please help and tell me which type of graphics card i need, there is only 3 x pci slots so presume it is just a PCI graphics card i need, but then i sore PCI x16 and PCIe cards on ebay now iam not sure.

Any help would be greatfully appricated please.

Many thanks

You need a PCI video card, for the Dimension 3000, PCIe x16 cards require a different slot, the 3000 does not have.

The Dimension 3000 only has a 250w power supply [unless it's been upgraded to higher wattage PSU].

Look for a GeForce 6200 512MB 64-bit DDR2 PCI 2.1 Video Card, this will work with the default 250w PSU.

Note: The Dimension 3000 is not a gaming system, it's an entry level computer.

The GeForce FX5500 256MB PCI should work in the Dimension 3000, but it's a low end card and there are better cards available.

If you cannot locate the PCI card I first posted, try looking for:

ATI Radeon X1300 PCI 256MB

GeForce 8400GS 256 MB DDR3 PCI

Hi again

Ive just spoken with a seller on ebay and inquired about a card - GeForce FX5500 256MB PCI

But the guy has just come back to me and said it not compatible with the Dell Dimension 3000

Ive just read on here somewhere that this card is fine to use so now iam totally confused, don't want to purchase and find it doesn't work.

Any other ideas what card can be used please

Thanks Dean

Yes, the Vtx3d 512mb Radeon Hd 5450 Pci Graphics Card, should be fine, but you would need to upgrade the power supply to a 400w, or higher unit.

I did find a used PNY Geforce 6200 256MB PCI Graphics Card on eBayUK, that should work without upgrading the power supply.

The 5450 has a power draw of around 25 watts, so it should work with a 250-watt power supply.

I ran a 4670, which has a much greater power draw than a 5450,  with a 275-watt power supply. I didn't have any problems.

"use the following search string on ebayuk...

pci video 256 -"pci-e"

The Dimension 3000 only has 33mhz 32 bit PCI 2.2 Slots.

There are ZERO PCI-E cards that will fit in a Dimension 3000.

The card that the OP Mentioned is the correct PCI Type and will work fine.

"pci-e" will not fit.

Hi to all

Thanks Bev ive got my eyes on that - PNY Geforce 6200 256MB PCI Graphics Card if that fails then i shall buy the Vtx3d 512mb Radeon Hd 5450 Pci Graphics Card, i will upgrade the power supply as precaution want the computer to be safe for my little lad.................thanks so much for your help.

Also to everyone who else gave help think i started quite a topic here and few heated words were exchanged, i new the pci express cards didn't fit, i tried what MUTO said and done a search on ebay using string - pci video 256 -"pci-e"

to my surprise it actually brought up 38 cards that were only PCI and never brought up any PCIe cards at all will have to remember that search method how many times have we put something in ebay search only for it to bring up items you didn't want, i kept putting into ebay search pci graphics cards yet loads of PCIe cards kept coming up as well.

Using the search string MUTO said  this made ebay search only for PCI cards, so something new learned today :)

Again thanks to all for your help its was greatfully appreciated

Thanks Dean

Well ive just checked the power supply and its only 170w not much at all, so have just order a new power supply from amazon 500w for £13.44 with delivery probably not the best make in the world but should be good enough for what i need and it had good reviews....
