Dimension 4600 Audio

Have problem with NO audio output from speakers.  Appears speakers good.  Am trying to repair PC for an elder friend, and have not yet opened PC.  Can anyone tell me whether the Audio is provided by a card or was it built directly on the board???

Depends on whether it was purchased with an optional sound card.  If the GREEN speaker jack is on the motherboard I/O panel then it's the ADI 198X audio chip.   HERE is the Dell drivers.

Several suggested items.  1. check the volume control panel to make sure nothing is muted and/or the volume controls are in the down (off) position.   2. Uninstall the sound in the Device Manager then restart the PC and Windows should detect and reinstall the sound - this fixes a lot of sound problems.  3. Reinstall the Dell driver.
