Dimension 4700 boot problem
Hello All.
I am attempting to troubleshoot a friends Dimension 4700.
It will not boot, only:
1 - amber light on the front panel
2 - rear fan spins at max and stays that way
3 - no video output at all
Things I have tried:
1 - swapped video card
2 - swapped ram
3 - swapped power supply
4 - removed heatsink and applied Artic Silver 5
5 - unplugged HDD and removed other PCI cards
No change in boot up, I am thinking it is the CPU or motherboard.
When I removed the CPU I noticed two different sPec numbers etched into the top.
1st, in center(like normal):
3.4GHz/1M/800
SL7J8 Costa Rica
3432A758
2nd, off to the side:
3.0GHz/1M/800
SL8BM Costa Rica
3432A785T
I am confused, I have never seen this before.
When I check the system config on the Dell website it lists:
J9114 PROCESSOR..., 80547, PENTIUM 4 PRESCOTT DT..., Pentium 4 Prescott DT, 3.0GHZ, 1 MEGB, 800FSB..., SKT-T
Any thoughts?
Also, will a Cedarmill Proc (Intel Pentium 4 641 Cedar Mill 3.2GHz 2MB L2 Cache LGA 775 86W 65nm) work in this system, with the A10 BIOS?
Thanks!

Is the power button LED solid amber or blinking amber?
What is the reading of the diagnostic Light's on the back panel?
Bev.

Disconnect All hardware from the motherboard, leaving the PSU connector(s), processor and 1 memory module, video card if you need one, otherwise use onboard video, disconnect all other power connectors to devices, can you get a post screen now?
If no, remove the memory module and try again, did you get a memory error?
If no, then it is a bad mobo or processor, might be time for a new PC.

Can you get POST messages without a CPU?

SOLID Amber.
No Diag Lights are lit = "The computer is in a normal off condition or a possible pre-BIOS failure has occurred."

With the processor installed and using a 'know' working power supply, try the following.
Remove the power cord, hold power button in for several seconds to discharge the residue power.
Remove all the PCI cards, the video card [if applicable], memory, all peripherals, disconnect the data and power cables to all the drives, check that the front panel cable is connected to motherboard, with nothing else connected to the system, reconnect the power cable and power the system on.
If you do not get any beep codes or diagnostic lights on the back panel, then it would appear that motherboard has died.

I don't believe you will get any beeps or diagnostic lights if the CPU is dead.
More likely the motherboard has died. That is much more common.

Tried disconnecting everything as you suggested Bev...
No lights or beeps.
It's weird though, there is still power to the rear/CPU fan header, so the board isn't completely dead.
If the CPU was dead, would I get any beeps or diag lights? I wish I had a spare compatible CPU or motherboard to check further.
Thanks for the help.
