Dimension 8400 Max CPU supported
Hello a friend of mine has a Dimension 8400 from 2004. I want to know what is the max CPU this system can support? If you need the service tag let me know and I will post it if allowed.
Thanks

You can upgrade to any Socket LGA775, 5xx, 6x0 or 6x2 processor, with 90nm architecture, but not the 6x1 processors.
8400 systems do not support dual core [Pentium D] or Core 2 Duo processors.
The 670 3.8Ghz is the largest.

Thanks for the fast reply. Please clarify one thing for me, 6x2 means what? Is that the Cedar Mill Processors? I am hoping it is because from what I have learned those were the best P4's and contain 2mb cache memory.

Cedar Mill CPU's are not supported, they have 65nm architecture, not 90nm.
To distinguish Cedar Mill cores from Prescott cores with the same features, Intel added 1 to their model number
6x2 is the Intel processor rating number.
Note: Prior to installing the processor, check that you have BIOS version A09, or higher, when support for newer processors was added.

Hi there! I was wondering, when you say it will support a 6x2 if this is the max CPU it will support?

As already posted, the 3.8Ghz is the largest processor supported by the Dimension 8400, the 8400 does not support any of the dual core processors.
Note: Prior to installing the processor, check that you have BIOS version A09, or higher, when support for newer processors was added.

BIOS UPDATE BEFORE CHANGING PROCESSOR. YOU IGNORE THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Official supported cpus
So with HT and EMT 64 I would recommend W9854
