disabled system restore

My problem is mostly the same as my other questions. The checkmarks that don't stay unchecked when I uncheck them, hit apply, ok & reboot.
I spoke with several tech's at Dell & they actually had me re-partition the hard drive! I had to completely reinstall windows Me on my refubished pc, & I just got it February 25th! They told me the registry is not remembering the changes I make.
The system properties>file system>troubleshooting>area, where you uncheck "display system restore" rechecks itself each time I reboot. If I have to restore the system, I'm unable to becauce the "disabled" box won't stay unchecked!
I've spoken to four tech's at Dell & they haven't been able to correct this!
Can anyone help or do I have to return the pc because something is not right with it? Thanks,
Bev

Hi Marvin,
No, the tech had me go into Dos, type several commands to completely repartition the hard drive. Then I had to completely reinstall all drivers, with their step by step guidance, reinstall all progams & printer, etc. Not one of them mentioned the Clean 1k, unless the Dos procedure took care of that??
I had to do this twice. The first tech had me reinstall Windows Me without doing a complete repartition. This caused me more problems. The second tech then took me through the Dos procedure. The third tech led me through the drivers installation, although I had to download SBLive from Dell downloads because it wouldn't work with the CD they sent.
I feel terrible, as I just this evening helped find a refurbished 4100, like mine, for a friend & she purchased it online!
ARE the tech's correct in telling me that the registry is not remembering the changes I make??
Thanks, Marvin
Bev

An addition to my last message to Marvin,
The tech who took me to DOS did have me type in "debug" as one of the several commands.

When you reinstalled ME did Tech have you do it like this;

You may have to run Clean 1k and reinstall ME again. I can not think of any reason why a clean reinstall of ME would not solve your problem.

Sorry I could not think of anything else to do.

Hi Bev,
I am not fimiliar with DOS, I got a computer late and never had to use it.When I had to reinstall my OS Dell had me use Clean 1k, and I had to actually type "CLEAN1K.EXE".Dell had me add it to my Boot Disk. Did they have you use a Boot Disk; and fdisk and create a primary Dos partition; then Format C, then type C Setup and ME installed? I would say Tech was probably right about your Registry not remembering your settings. But I do not know why. Reinstalling ME should set everything back to new and everything should run. I never had any luck with ME, but others claim it runs fine. The only other thing I can think of is to post in the Delltalk ME forum here;

http://delltalk.us.dell.com/messages/overview.asp?page=1&name=WinME

I would post something like this;" Registry will not remember setting,reinstall of ME did not help". Then say you have reinstalled the OS and you still can not save your settings and Dell claims it is a problem with the registry but you do not know how to fix the problem in your registry. I went through several pages of posts in ME and I could not find a problem like you are having. I'll keep looking.

I have bought two refurbished Dells and they both run great, so I think your friend will be OK. Buying a Refurbished Dell is still good advice and I recommend them to all my friends. So do not feel badly. You have just got to find the right Dell/Talker to help you. I'm sorry I could not take you further.

Bevysr,

Have you looked at this Micorsoft article on troubleshooting System Restore:

http://support.microsoft.com/search/preview.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q306768

After reformating and reinstalling, there should be nothing wrong with your registry, but there could be something else wrong with System Restore. For example, if you do not have enough hard disk space for System Restore to store its files, you will not be able to enable System Restore.

Let us know if this helps.

Steve

Hi, I had the same problem with WinME, it's a very usual problem and can't fix it reinstalling Windows. You only have to download a program called "BigFix" (freeware, for instance in www.softonic.com, but this site is in spanish). It looks for upgrades, patchs, etc for Windows. The first one It downloaded was the solution for this problem. You will be able to restore your system starting from the date you fixed it.
I'm sorry for my English! ;), I hope this post helps you!

Thank you, vatsuro. I don't read Spanish but maybe the site has some software that is similar to Bigfix in English.
Your English was wonderful!

Hi,
This is an updated reply about BigFix to vatsuro.
I found the Bigfix download at CNet.com. Thanks again for the information on this download. Its a wonderful download for everyone to have on their pc, as it finds problems & automatically fixes them. I still have the same problem, as it hasn't found the problem that is causing it, but I have had success with other fixes it found & automatically fixed for me.

Thanks Steve,
The site didn't give me any other help to fix the problem. I do have enough disk space & memory, so still don't know why the problem still exists. I'm still looking for answers though.
