Driver update failure and some issues....
I tried to update my Nvidia drivers to the newest release. I'll give you a step by step explanation of what I did and where I'm at.
Used add/remove programs and uninstalled Nvidia drivers while in normal mode. Using Windows vista home premium 32
Ran Driver Cleaner afterwards, during the cleaning process it had said that the pc would need to be restarted to remove some final files. Restarted back into windows and the screen was black for over an hour.
Restart into safe mode, however it resorted to a temporary user profile, no updated nvidia driver file available (was saved to desktop) I restarted into safe mode a couple times and still only get the temp profile, It says that any changes wont be saved.
Ran system restore the last point which was right before I started all of this. Logged on to Windows in normal mode, drivers are back to where the were before the attempted update but I still only have the temp user profile available to me.
Not sure what to do here to get back to normal (and then update the drivers the right way) If anyone can help me I'd greatly appreciate it, thanks in advance.

I would go to the Nvidia site and download the 175.19 drivers(work best for my 8800 GTX) save them to your downloads. Then Just go to control panel-programs and features and delete the Nvidia drivers. I wouldnt mess with anything else. Just delete, reload, done. When I messed with driver cleaner it really cleaned it up good, including my ESA software. Just try that and see how it works. You should be fine. You can do a google for 175.19 drivers if its hard to find them on Nvidia's site. Good luck.

I use Driver Sweeper. It also splits out the Nvidia Chipset from the Nvidia Display. See here. Plus, it is free.

Hesser,
The exact same thing happened to me Sunday night. I removed the Nvidia driver and ran Driver cleaner which resulted in a black screen with the PC (and HD) still running.
I was able to just go to a restore point earlier in the day to fix my problem.
I wonder if it was Driver Cleaner…mine is an older version. When it cleans the Nvidia info, I wonder if it nukes any motherboard info too.
I did try it again last night (not using Driver Cleaner) and was successful with the latest 180 beta drivers (designed for Far Cry 2).

Well I have the drivers updated to the latest version, however I'm still having major issues with user profiles.
Each time I log into windows be in Normal or safe modes I get a message saying that the user profile was not loaded correctly and that I have been logged on with a temporary profile. I'm not sure what to do here, It's rather annoying having an essentially new profile loaded for me everytime I restart the pc. Anyone have suggestions? Thanks!
