DSL/CABLE Routing Question

If I want to route my CABLE connection to another computer in the house, what is involved?

I know I need a router, which I can get from COMPUSA (and dont give me the compusa is overpriced speech either!, I need this NOW) but do I need another cable modem? How do you connect it all?

Is there a slowdown issue?

make sure you cable cords are long enough they have serveral different sizes. Im using the 25" just incase one day I want my computers to be further apart. Then I dont have to worry about if the cable cord is long enough.

All you need is a router and 2 newtwork cables running from each computer. Each system must have an ethernet card. My router is linksys. You only need one cable modem with an ethernet port. How it works. You cable modem is pluged in to the router other in the cable outlet. I have a 4 port. plug in both network cables in to the router. Thats that

It's a few more bucks, but if you are upstairs and downstairs etc, try wireless. you will need wirelelss ethernet cards ($40-50 each) and a wireless router/switch combo about $ 100.00. (roughly figure wireless is twice as much, but you can discount $25-$50 worth of 5e patch cable).

Its definetly quiet, I just notice a very small sound of a hiss like a monitor being on. I dont think its a problem, I think i just have it too close to me on the desk. Should it be away from the monitor? computer? etc? I havent found a place for it yet.

My Dlink router hangs on the wall behind the desk.  I have it on a switchbox so if I need to reset it I turn the box off.

Make sure you do the following:

1) Erase the default password that everyone knows and put in your own password.

2) Consider running ZoneAlarm in addition to the Linksys firewall.

3) Read this re: Linksys firmware bug and fix: http://www.nwfusion.com/net.worker/news/2002/1104linksys.html

4) Have fun!

Thanks guys. Went with Lynksys router fro 80 bucks, and connected it to the two computers. It works well, but theres a sound coming from it, like a high pitched sound. Any idea why this is? Its really low, but I can hear it and its irritating. Any ideas???????

Hi,

It could be the power supply. Sometimes they do make noise like that.
Just pack it back up and exchange it. It happens so seldom, you have a very good chance of getting a quite one.

Norton's firewall is fine.  The Linksys firewall capability is already enabled, so you get both.  However, go in and reset the password.  It takes about 30 seconds.

Ok heres how it was setup.

Cable comes in, goes to the cable modem. Then goes to Router. router to Computer 1, and Computer 2. Thats it.

Now, what is this about the security? I have Norton 2002 on both systems. I dont care for the firewall it comes with, or the passwords or any of that. Why should I be? Do i need to be?

Hi again,

Rick is correct as long as you always use the Norton firewall.
Change the Linksys password.

Hi again,

OK then, from your discription I thought that the noise was distracting.
I have mine setting under the monitor under the cable modem. Follow ricks advice about the password and getting a firewall. I suggest Sygate for your firewall. They have a free version just like ZA and from what I read, there are less people trying to write programs to defeat it since ZA is so main stream. And I like Sygate's interface much better.

BTW, I use the Pro version which has a few more features buy the free is at least equal to ZA.

Hi,

The Linksys router can be accessed by any browser. If someone had access to your system (like a hacker) they could add or change settings to allow anyone to access your system.
A firewall will not allow any program "Out" of your system unless you tell it 'OK'. It's a good thing to have "just in case" and you would be surprised at how many programs want to call home without telling you that they do. Needless to say, the firewall also stops someone from getting "In" to your system, but the router does most of that work already.

You will find with the router after you register, a special offer for the Zone Alarm Pro.  In order to use it, you will also have to install the firmware patch.

Here is link to the patch I am referring to.:
