To boot from the -ROM drives, you'll need to go into the BIOS and change the boot order so that a CD or DVD drive boots before the hard drive.

If you replace the CD-ROM drive with a DVD/CD-ROM drive, you will be able to boot from CDs and DVDs (if those disks are bootable).

THANKS FOR THE REPLY. BUT....

I LOOKED AT MY BIOS AND HERE IS WHAT IS LISTED IN THE
BOOK SEQUENCE:
1. CD-ROM DEVICE
2. DISKETTE DEVICE
3. HARD DISK C
4. BEV DEVICE (NOT INSTALLED)

I DO HAVE A CD-ROM (SONY) DRIVE INSTALLED.
AND A MEMOREX DVD RW+/- DUAL LAYER DRIVE.

I HESITATE TO PUT ITEM 4 UP ON TOP OF THE BOOT
SEQUENCE AS IT SAYS "NOT INSTALLED". BUT I
WOULD IMAGINE THAT IT WOULD SKIP IT IF IT DID
NOT BOOT ITEM 4 AND JUST CONTINUE THE SEQUENCE.
UNSURE IF IT MEANS THE MEMOREX DVD DRIVE AT 4.

THIS WHY I THOUGHT JUST SWAPING A NEW DVD-ROM/CD-ROM
WOULD SIMPLY SOLVE THE PROBLEM AND BOOT BOTH DVD & CD.

LATER ON WISH TO DUAL BOOT LINUX/WINDOWS AND INSTALL
LINUX FROM DVD.

SUGGESTIONS WELCOME.

One thing about Forums: When you type in all caps, it indicates that you are yelling.

Instead of buying a DVD-Rom drive, just remove the CD-ROM drive and use the DVD+/-RW Drive only since it can do all that you need it to do (read/write CDs and read/write DVDs).

As for Item 1 on the list, the CD-ROM might just mean that it is all optical drives (DVD or CD). You could try seeing if you could change the CD-ROM to say the DVD drive, but you may not have to worry about it since the BIOS may check both drives when you boot.

THANKS FOR UR SUGGESTIONS.
DISCONNECTED THE SONY CD-ROM COMPLETELY AND
MOVED THE FLAT RIBBON DOWN TO THE MEMOREX DVD/CD-ROM/RW
DRIVE. I VAGUELY RECALL THAT THERE IS AN ORDER, MASTER
AND SLAVE ORDER, SO I MADE SURE THAT MASTER CONNECTOR
WENT TO THE MEMOREX DVD/CD-ROM/RW DRIVE INSTEAD OF THE
ONE THAT I HAD THERE WHICH WOULD BE THE SLAVE CONNECTOR.

THEN I TRIED BOOTING AGAIN USING A SUSE LINUX BOOT
CD WHICH WORKED AND THEN A SUSE LINUX DVD BOOT WHICH
ALSO WORKED. WHICH MEANS THE SONY CD-ROM WAS NOT
WORKING PROPERLY ANYHOW. (I HAD ALSO TRIED BOOTING
FROM THE MEMOREX DVD DRIVE BUT IT DID NOT WORK CONNECTED
TO THE SLAVE SPOT OR SECONDARY DRIVE ON THE FLAT RIBBON.)

SO UR SUGGESTION HAS SAVED ME A FEW BUCKS, THANK YOU.
AS TO USING CAPITALS, I AM VERY NEARSIGHTED AND HAVE
SPECIAL GLASSES FOR COMPUTER USE. I WRITE ALL MY EMAILS
IN CAPITALS, EASIER TO SEE AND READ THEM. THERE ARE
LOTS OF FOLKS WHO HAVE EYE PROBLEMS, USING CAPITALS
MAKES IT EASIER FOR THEM. FOR ONE, DIABETICS ALL HAVE
EYE PROBLEMS AND THERE ARE A LOT THEM. SO THAT IDEA
NEEDS UPDATING, DON'T U THINK?

AGAIN, MANY THANKS FOR UR HELP.
SMYTHY

Your welcome.

As for the text, I didn't realize, but generally, all caps indicates yelling. You can increase the text size without the caps. If you are using Internet Explorer, you can just hold down the Ctrl Key and turn the mouse wheel up or down to increase the browser text size.
