E510 Will Not boot

I have a Dell Dimension that is a little over a year old that will not boot. The power button light flickers and there is a light on the motherboard that is on but no fans turn on and system will not boot. Any ideas why?

What color is the power light? Is it blinking (regularly) or "flickering" (more random)?

Do the diagnostic lights (1-2-3-4 on the front) show anything?

First guess is the PSU.

What is the reading of the power button LED, solid green, blinking green, solid amber, blinking amber?

What is the sequence of the diagnostic LEDs at the front panel of the case?

Dell's E510/D5150 diagnostic guide and troubleshooter is here.

Also, check out the discussion here about the E510.

A blinking Amber LED, usually indicates a power supply or system board failure has occurred. As a power supply costs less then a motherboard, try installing a different power supply.

The D-5150/E510 does not use a Dell proprietary power supply, you can use most standard generic ATX power supplies with either a 24-pin or 20+4-pin main motherboard power connector.

This system has an open back panel, a power supply with or without the on/off switch can be used.

Make certain the power supply has two SATA power connectors.

The light on the power button blinks orange(amber) consistintly, blink....blink....blink....blink and never stops. The light on the motherboard stays on and t is green. No fans turn on, no pwr supply fan, no case fan and no cpu fan.

Having just had the same issue, I checked out the PSU by jumpering the power on pins; then took the machine back to a minimum of components and it still wouldn't boot.  Then, I tried replacing the cmos battery - and all sprang into life.  I would therefore suggest replacing the battery before you do anything else, especially if you can't boot to see the diagnostic lights!
