ECC & Non-ECC memory

I received two 512 MB RDRAM memory modules today from Dell. I installed them in my Dimension 8200 and during bootup when I press F2 to view configuration settings and then view the settings for the installed RAM these two 512 MB memory modules are listed as "non-ECC" and the two installed 256 MB memory modules are listed as "ECC"
On Dell's Web site these products are listed as 512MB Module for a Dell Dimension 8200 Series System184-pin RIMM w/ECC PC800
I was trying to avoid mixing ECC with non-ECC memory. Does anyone know if mixing ECC with non-ECC RDRAM will cause problems?

doug,

It is okay to use this configuration however, the ecc function will not be in effect unless all the modules are ecc. I am currently running this type of setup in my Dimension 4100 and everything is fine. See this information about ECC vs Non ECC.

I too have a dell 8200 and was thinking of ordering from them and having one of their techs install another 256 mb or ram for me. Question, having 256 now, would I even see much difference having another 256 mb? or am I throwing money away. Using win ME and whether I upgrade to xp is a good question although they have sent me the upgrade...... leary of it at this time.

thanks

Karen

I would upgrade to xp and add more memory. Installing RIMMs is not difficult.

Do you know if it matters which RIMMs are in the first two slots? For example, should I install the two 256 MB ECC RIMMs in the first two slots and the two 512 MB non-ECC RIMMs in the last two slots? Or should the non-ECC 512s come first?

Thanks.

You should post your own question. But since your here RDram must be installed in matching pairs. So if you want 256m then install two 128 chips.

Shuttle Motherboard
Via chipset P4x266 VT8233 DDRam Support
Windows XP (home edition - Clean Install!)

Santa Cruz Sound Card (4127 beta drivers)
Dell 991 Monitor - Altec Lansing 885 Thx Speakers
Microtek 3700 Scanner - HP 1100 Printer

Doug,

I don't think it matters which is installed first. The key here is to make sure that they are matching pairs (all 256MB) and use the same speed (all PC800).
