email/cable modem issues

I have the strangest problem. Since I got my new Dimension 8200 (w/Windows XP), I can't send Outlook email through my Comcast modem. I had been blaming them, but it worked on my old laptop. I can receive email, and I can connect to some sites. The email problem also applies to sending invoices from Quickbook. I have to use my AOL dialup, even though I can send and receive email on AOL when I'm connected through the Comcast cable connection. My internet connection problem seems to be with secure sites, like lehmanlive.com. And I'm having problems buying anything online, since I can't look at my shopping cart or go to check out. Again, these sites work fine when I dial-up on AOL, just not when I connect via LAN. I've been bugging Comcast, but they are stumped. I hate to pay for a cable connection I can't really use.

GraciesMom,
I too am on cable and I just tried your lehmanlive link and it worked fine for me. Try going to Tools>Internet Options>Advanced and scroll down to make sure SSL 2.0 and SSL 3.0 are checked. Also make certain under HTTP 1.1 settings that use HTTP 1.1 is checked. This may help. You could also try in Outlook Express go to Tools>Options>General Tab and see if Outlook is check as Default Mail Handler. Also in Internet Explorer you could try setting your Internet security to medium if it is set at high.

Good Luck,

Marvin P

Thanks for responding! All checked in IE6.0., but the problem spans both IE and the AOL browser when connected via LAN.

GraciesMom,
I can not help with AOL, I know nothing about it. But I have heard AOL does strange stuff. Try calling AOL maybe they can answer your questions, sorry I could not be of more help .

Thanks anyway, MarvinP. I'm thinking it has something to do with my security settings, or possibly Norton Antivirus. I just haven't changed anything from default, though. I will try calling AOL. Thanks again.

Here's another resource that may help. The newsgroup comp.dcom.modems.cable frequently has posts involving Comcast.

have you disable the XP firewall?

Thanks to everybody! I finally got someone at Comcast who knew what it was. I had installed the disk they sent out when they converted from @home to @comcast.net. Apparently, the version of IE was lower than the one I had, which is a no no in XP. XP didn't allow the downgrade, but did allow my version to be messed up. In addition, it wouldn't let me reinstall a downloaded copy of IE from Microsoft, because it said it had a newer version. I had to do a system restore to go back in time, which meant I had to re-install any software I had loaded, but that was okay. I'm just in the process of finding all my old setups and files, because they're not in the old default locations when I open an app. But my internet connection is lightening fast! Yeah!!! Thanks again!
