It would be helpful if you gave some more info about the OS and PC since it may be a number of different problems. Do you have the latest video driver for your configuration? Do you have spyware on the machine? Have you run a virus scan lately? How many programs are running at startup?

Post back and fill us in on more details.

I running Win XP with a Dell 8200 with P4 2.0, and I've just begun to have this problem, and it seems almost as if my computer is taking far longer to start up than it previously did. It also won't start up my virus program even though it's set to do so. I don't feel spyware or a virus are a problem since I routinely scan and search for both.

If you've downloaded any freeware lately you may have picked up some spyware or possibly a virus.

If your anti virus app. is disabled go to pcpitstop for an online scan.

Go to the link below for the removal of spyware.

Post back if you find anything

I realize you said that you scanned for viruses but you also mentioned that your virus program would not start. The Klez virus does disable some antivirus programs and you might read through the info at http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.klez.h@mm.html
to read up on what to do in case you have the Klez.

Beyond that maybe somebody with XP that can recreate your problem on their machine might jump in here to help.

Good Luck,

Joe

skipnyamaha,
Joecapp raises a good point. There are a number of viruses in the wild other than Klez that can disable antivirus programs. I found one called W32.Yaha on a client's computer a couple of weeks ago and there are some brand new trojan horses out out there capable of the same thing.

You might try using an online virus scanner like the one at Trend Micro's web site or Symantec's.
