Erratic Mouse

Has anybody been able to resolve the erratic mouse issue? Atfer an hour of use, the mouse begins to act erractically and the only solution is to shut down or restart but the same thing will happen an hour or so later. I've tried cleaning the system, scandisk, uninstalling then reinstalling the mouse drivers, reloading Windows ME but nothing works. What's going on? My system is an 1.3 g 8100 3 months old. Please help!

Hello Brian,

I've been having the same problem for a couple months now and I see by the Dell Forum that TONS of people have the same problem. I've been corresponding with Susan at Dell Support and she gave me a whole procedure to go through, in addition to the fact that I already reinstalled the mouse driver (no change) and ran the diagnostic disk (no change). She replied that Dell is aware of the problem. Now I'm wondering why they don't get on the ball and do something about it. I'm a little disillusioned with them. The only way I gain control over my mouse (after it has gone to sleep for several hours) is to reboot each time. What a nuisance! I don't know what else to do, but good luck to you!

Bryanlb,
I have an older Dell system (xps 400)that has similar problems as the one you are describing. My mouse becomes erratic whenever the systems resources goes to the loading of a program or website. It seems to take all the systems resources to load a program, and it takes away from the mouse. As soon as the system gets the program loaded, the mouse will return back to normal. After continuous loading of programs, the performance of my computer is down enough that I have to restart windows. I am told this problem is due to a "memory leak"that is present in Windows. Were you ever able to get your problem resolved, and if so what did they do. Any insight you could give would be appreciated.
Thanks,
rpshealy

Hi BryanB,

My 8100 is also 3 months old. My mouse is doing the same exact thing. I am ready to pull my hair out. I don't get any concrete suggestions from technical support. I have done everything they have suggested at no avail. Do you have a Service Contract? I do and am ready to call and get a local technician out here. The problem is though, when they get here the mouse will act fine. Then if they don't stay for a couple hours they won't see the problem. I will have to have it on all day prior to their arrival. I hope I can get this fixed.

It seems several people are having this problem. What do you think we should all do? It is must frustrating!

Hi Caralyn:

It seems I am not the only one with problems. My computer is only 2 months old and the mouse acts erratic after being up for about 2 hours. I called Tech Support and they suggested I clean the mouse. Really!!!!!!!!!! I have also done the diagnostics, etc. and nothing works. The only way to correct it is to reboot!!!!!!!!

Do I have to live with this? Why pay all this money and then you can't even use the computer for longer than 2 hours before the mouse acts up.

I got a print out of things to do and NONE work! I have a job in which I take catalogue orders through my computer. I cannot afford to have to stop and reboot every 2 hours!

I have heard Dell is the best - well I am not too pleased with them now! I had a Packard Bell (which is supposed to be the worst) for over 6 years and NEVER had a problem with the mouse (and I never even cleaned it!)

THis is a serious problem and needs to be addressed! I am ready to return my computer!

What do you suggest?????????????? It is very frustrating to pay this much money and then not have it work like promised.

Dell needs to get busy and correct these problems.

Have you called to have it serviced by a local service representative? That is my next step.

Hi Sally-Jo,

It was good to hear from someone who is having the same problem. I'm pretty disgusted with Dell right now also. I've had my computer for a few years and have never had trouble until now. I've been communicating with Susan at Dell Support and I have done absolutely everything that she has suggested and NOTHING works. When my computer goes to sleep (I guess it's when the hard drive shuts down) and I try to use it again, there's no control over the mouse. She had me change the power management (among a TON of other things) and this didn't do any good either. I don't know what else to do. No, I haven't called a service person - Susan admits that Dell is well aware of the problem but it simply hasn't been resolved. I don't think I should have to pay for a service call - although yours is still under warranty and probably can get it replaced - if it ends up being necessary. Let me know what else you might find out from them - they certainly won't let me know what's happening -- such as WHAT ARE THEY GOING TO DO FOR ME???

Hi Caralyn,

I is indeed disgusting. I have service agreement for 3 yrs which covers any service calls. Our friend is a computer wiz and says it is the driver. He is going to come and take a look at this! It is a bit upsetting to say the least.

My husband is a contractor for FedEx. He delivers alot of Dells to downtown Denver. They all love them. He was telling one client of my problems with the mouse and he said he purchased a cordless keyboard (never knew those existed) and cordless mouse from Dell and has not had any problem.

As far as I am concerned at this time, Dell's customer service is the worst. They are the leading computer company, and believe me they ACT LIKE IT. They don't seem to care so many people are having "mouse" problems. I sent a long e-mail to tech support and I will see what they say. They usually say the same thing. Believe me I am not one to sit and let them get away with this! It is not fair! From what I read, a lot of people are having "mouse" problems.

It has to be driver problem, because when we reboot the mouse acts normal for another couple of hours!

Have you ever heard of a cordless keyboard? I will look up on the Dell website to see. Why should I have to purchase something else to correct a problem them are resposible for. These are made in Mexico and I don't think they have been properly inspected.

Look forward to your next comments.

After reinstalling ME twice and doing everything else 100 times, I reinstalled my Sound driver of all things and guess what? Everything now works fine, no more erratic mouse, even when the system is under a load and left on for hours at a time !! You might give it a try and let me know if it works.

I have the same problem with my 8100, and its not that 512 of ram is not enough

I just bought a Dim 4700, with 512 mb ram, 3.0Ghz and audigy 2 zs sound card and ATI x300 SE v-card.

My mouse is driving me nuts!  I've read through the Dell support pages, and I have several comments:

1.  Mouse erratic movement can be due to the physical (dirty lens, 'wrong' mousepad, assembly line malfunctioning mice).

2.  It can be a memory issue (not enough memory for all the applications that are running, either on top or hidden from view).  This can happen even if you have 512MB RAM.  McAfee runs continuously, for example, running a virus scan and a firewall.

3.  It can be a driver issue (the drivers may be working improperly, be out of date, or for whatever reason, just funky).

4.  It can be a Windows issue with all of their updates and their service packs.

5.  Something else.

Due to the number of people who have experienced the same problems without success with initial fixes, I am guessing that it is a combination of factors.  BUT, I am convinced there IS a single factor in common with all the defective mice, other than the really common factor that we all bought Dell.

So far, I have -

1.  Cleaned the lens
2.  Removed shiny light "Dell" mouse pad that came with my system and replaced with pad with a dark matte finish.
3.  Reinstalled the mouse driver

I'll let you guys know if any of this has helped.
