Is this a "one-time" occurrence or, is it a frequent error. If only once, I would just ignore it.

If it has, or is, occurring often you might try this. Go to Start>Find>Files or Folders and in the search line enter "win386.swp" without the quotes. Be sure the "Look In" line indicated your C:\ drive and OK the search. When found right click on the file and select "Properties". If the "Read-Only" box is checked, uncheck it. Only "Archive" should be checked.

You're right, you normally do need to do a little tweaking on a new PC. Once you have it "slicked out", errors should be very rare.

I might suggest to you to check out the url below for pruning down your startup list:

New computers historically come loaded up with too many programs running in the background. These programs (known as Temporary/Stay Residents or, TSR's) sap necessary system resources that could otherwise be used for running YOUR applications. This site is an excellent source for "pruning" your Startup list and thereby putting more gas in your tank.

One other thing I might mention is that there have been a lot of posts here about the Attune software installed on new Dells. I am not personally familiar with this program and have only a general idea of what it does...however, some very sharp people that are *regulars* here have tried the program and found it to be highly problematic. Other posters with various problems of "unknown" origin have solved them with the uninstallation of this program. Bottom line is that if you continue to have various problems, consider an uninstall of this software...it obviously does not have all the "bugs" out.

Be sure to come back if you feel the need...good luck, enjoy your new Dell.

Thanks Dan. This is a new computer (just got Thursday) and I've been getting some Internet Exlorerer page fault errors. I guess you have to work the "bugs" out..I'm a total computer novice. I did what you said and the archive only was checked, not read. I'll hopefully not get any more. I just get terrified when I get them...is it something I am doing? Thanks again.

Dan, what is Attune, and what does it do?

As I said, I don't know too much about it. Here is a quote from Dell's configuration pages:

"A new software program factory installed on select Dimension and Inspiron systems. The key focus of the software is to recognize potential problems and notify the user of recommended actions to prevent them. Attune runs in the background on the user's computer monitoring hardware and software conditions. When a condition arises that requires attention Attune notifies the user and presents a helpful message called an Intelligram".

Sounds like another approach to Norton's Crashguard software to me...with similar results.

Thanks Dan. CrashGuard and FirstAid work slightly less well than Congress.
