Errors after power outage.

I have a Dell Inspiron 620.  After a power outage the computer would no longer boot to Windows 7.  I was finally able to boot into a system check screen (diagnostics).  It's the one that checks System, Cables, OS Boot Path, Hard Drive,CD Rom Drive, Video Card, CPU and System Fan, Processor, and Memory.  ALL test pass except the Hard Drive.  It gave me an error code of 2000.0142.  There was no way to recover my OS; apparently because of the HD failure.  BTW, I did run the diagnostics 3 times and it gives me this same error each time.

I decided to changed the hard drive to another of the same size and go ahead in do a clean install with Windows 10.  It still won't do anything.  The Windows 10 attempts the install but freezes after "Getting files ready for installation, or after Installing features (I attempted several installs and each time it freezes somewhere along the path).  I believe the freezing is taking place when it attempts to write files to the HD.  I think the MB was fried during the power outage (possibly the HD controller).  The CD drive works fine and I was able to check ALL the pins from the power supply.  The voltages are perfect at every pin.

Tech support was no help at all.  Rude and wouldn't even let me ask my question or finish telling him what happened.  He just wanted to sell me new parts at a price almost as high as the computer cost originally.  He hung up immediately after I told him I just wanted to know what the error code is and didn't want to buy new hardware yet.

Any suggestions?  My next step is to install another MB,,, the same as is in it now, then try again to install Windows 10.

Thanks for any answers.

Google is your friend.

I did Google the error code ieee488.  It shows that error code is because of not cleaning up my system (too many bad files, etc) and I should clean it up.  Problem is, there are no files on the new HD.  Before the crash, i would clean my system about once a week using one of the system clean up tools that are available (I'm personally using Glary Utilities).

PSA code 2000-0142: Drive Self Test failed. Status byte = XXh.

Sounds like your HDD failed... :emotion-6:

It could be the HD *** out but I've already put a new formatted hard drive in and I still get the same errors when trying to install.  That's why I'm thinking the MB.

You can try clearing BIOS:

  1. Power off, unplug
  2. Press/hold power button for ~15 sec
  3. Open case and remove motherboard battery
  4. Press/hold power button for ~30 sec
  5. Reinstall the battery (use a fresh one if this one is old)

See if that helps...

I've ordered another MB.  It's one in the same as I have in there now.  Depending on what happens after I try that, I'll give your suggestion a try.
