CA Unicenter Asset Management option will do this. Not cheap though.
I once worked at a place that ran everything in thier network on shareware, :-( and they had a package called OCS Inventory. It pulled the info that your looking for. You can find it on a Google search.

Its functionality is limited, but it's cheap.

So between these 2 utilitys you can "run from the net"
Another way is to put sminfo.exe into the login script and pipe the output to the users home folder.
There are also vbscript ways of reading this info via WMI or SMI
