External CRT in Linux using Precision M60 howto

Hi, iam currently running Redhat 9 and I want to display the video on my DELL P990 CRT, preferably with the LCD turned off.  Iv tried various XFree configs and sometimes it was working and then I couldnt get anything.  My time is limited and if anyone can help me I will appreciate it.

As I understand one has to use nview to do this, at the very least I want the clone view with the CRT resulution at 1280x1024.
