External Hard Drive Question

I have a refurbished 8300 with XP Pro and 768 meg of ram.

I just bought a 80Gig Western Digital external hard drive which I would like to use to back up my existing C: drive and my wife's C: drive. (She has XP Home)

First question: The external HD is preformatted in FAT. Do I need to change this to NTFS?  How?

Second Question: I want to make two drive letters on the external HD to keep my and my wife's info separate. How do I do this?

I've read some stuff that says to right click on an empty portion and click on new Partition. Trouble is, this doesn't show up.

Sorry if I seem stupid about this stuff.... because I am totally ignorant of how to do this. I suppose I need to format the external HD, but didn't want to do that until I checked with all you wiser brains.

Thanks for your help.

David

'Start'> right click 'My Computer'> 'manage'> 'disk management'> read the 'help' for Formatting and Partitioning if you can't figure out the rest.

Hi Queengem1,
I can't answer your question about the partition. However, I have the same external drive that you have and it also has an FAT format. I just hooked it up to my DEll 4600 Windows XP computer, with NTFS format on the internal hard drive, and the external hard drive works fine. I did not reformat the external drive.
