Extremely slow installing windows xp pro

Hi
I am helping a friend with his computer its a dell dimension 8100, P4 with 128mb rambus memory purchased in 2001
It started running extremely slowly so i tried all the usual software (virus check, ad aware, spybot, hijack this etc) only to find no problems except that installing this software was extremely slow, for example it took hrs to install ad aware.

Having tried all this we decided to format his hard drive and start again it took about 10 hrs to install xp pro even using my cd rom drive which i know to be ok.

I then put 2 256mb sticks of rambus memory in the machine still no joy

Next I formatted his drive again in my machine (no problems there speed was ok)

Having tried all this we decided maybe he did have hard drive troubles so we replaced his hdd with a new Maxtor 80 gig still takes all night to install windows

Helpppppppppp :smileymad:

Check the BIOS setup to make sure it's not in compatibility/OS install mode. If it is, replace the CMOS battery, clear the CMOS (enter setup, illuminate num/caps/scroll lock, then ALT-E until you hear a tone, reboot). Go back in and take the system out of that mode, and try the install.

F2 to get into system setup. Look under CPU speed. It should be set to "normal".

To clear the CMOS:

Enter setup
Press CAPS LOCK, NUM LOCK AND SCROLL LOCK on the keyboard so the LEDs are ON.
Press ALT-E until you hear a tone.
Reboot.

The CMOS battery is a CR-2032 lithium coin cell you can buy for $2-3 anywhere. Given the age of the system, I'd replace it if it hasn't been replaced yet.
