Firewire PCI issues

I have a 530 w/Q6600 and 6G running Vista X64.  I bought a Firewire PCI card so I could connect my digital camera and camcorder.  Installation was fine, drivers loaded and the camcorder connected.  I transferred and processed my video.  All was well until I tried to shut down.  It went through the normal shut down process, but then immediately rebooted.  The only way I could shut down was to hold the power button in.  I removed the card and drivers and everything was back to normal.  Thinking it was a Vista 64 problem, I installed the card in my other computer which is another 530 w/Q6600 and 2G running XP home. Same exact thing.

Bad card?  Something I need to set in BIOS?  Any ideas???

I can only offer you some alternatives.

The trouble points to the card and the communication within Device Manager.

Did you verify Device Manager after loading the card and drivers?

Try going into the Setup Utility and disable any unnecessary IRQ's or devices that are not needed such as Parallel ports, unneeded serial ports, and check the settings for any PCI devices in CMOS.

That will free up some resources and possibly shift resources a bit.  Try also installing the card in a different PCI slot.

Research the manufacturer.  Try and exchange the card if you can find the receipt.

That's about all I can think of for the time being.

Good Luck

Thanks for the tips.  I did go to the Device Manager.  It said everything was good.  I searched for newer drivers.  No go there, it said I had the latest.  I tried the other PCI slot.  No change.  I did not go into set up though.  The 530 does not have serial or parallel ports, only the USB ports.  I do have a card reader installed, but my other computer does not (3.5 floppy instead), so that's probably out.  It's weird.  As I said, it installed and worked perfectly in both computers.  It's only when I try to shut down that I have a problem.  It wants to reboot unless I press and hold the power button to force it off.  The card is a Dynex brand.  I got it at Circuit City or Best Buy (forget which).  I do have the receipt.  Unless anyone has another idea, it's just going back for an exchange.  It must be the card though.  Two different computers with same MB and Processor, but different operating systems.  Same indications.

I bought two PCI firewire cards online and the manufacturer is ULTRA.  They are still sitting in the box and I have no immediate intentions to use them.  I have a hobby doing PC support as I have been doing it for 35 years.  I would look to find a different brand or maybe you can exchange it for a fifferent manufacturer.

I have installed about ten in the last two years but I never experienced that.

Good Luck
