Flash BIOS Update Program

I'm nearing 72 and no computer wizard so I get a bit scared when messing with systems, but especially the BIOS.

I am about to upgrade my graphics card to the NVidia 8800 GTX - I like games - and have been advised to update the BIOS before doing so. I have downloaded the OXP061-020503.EXE file.

Can anyone tell me what I do if things go belly up, despite all the precautions being taken - all peripherals disconnected, screensaver switched off, all programmes shut down &c? There's no use in a Restore Point, so what should I do?

Thank in advance for any help you can give me.

If your system is stable, then in all likelyhood the flash will go fine (assuming you got the right file).  You don't mention what computer you have?  On some of the older dells, it was better to flash from a true dos environment instead of windows -- but I think the need for that has largely been eliminated.

I have never had a dell flash go bad (and I've done lots of them).  Actually, I've never had any bios flash go bad on any computer ever.  Either I'm very lucky or the risk is very small.

There's not a lot you can do with a dell if the flash does corrupt the bios.  You can try unplugging it and taking the CMOS battery out, as sometimes after a flash a system won't boot due to configuration reasons (this is not a true "bad" flash though).  If the bios is corrupted though, realistically, you're looking at buying a new motherboard (unless the computer is under warranty).

While I tend to flash out of hand, feel free to read the changelog for the bios and see if it offers any fixes that would be useful for you.  It's probably not required for your new video card.

I think you'll be fine.  And I assume that O in the first letter of the filename in your first post was actually a D?  As in DXP061-020503.EXE

A really encouraging reply. Many thanks. I'll go ahead as I'm sure I've got it all okay.

Best wishes,

I forgot to mention... it's a Dimension 9200 with Vista Home Premium.

Yes, it's a 'D'. Thanks for the confirmation... It's always good to know there are people out there ready to help.
