Flash Memory stick failure

Flash memory sticks have stopped working in the USB ports of my Dimension 4700 (Windows XP rev 2). When plugged in, I get the usual two-note bong, but the memory doesn't appear in My Computer or Windows Explorer. The flash memory works fine in other computers. The USB ports are working for a card reader and for a printer. Behavior is the same for all of the USB ports. Device manager says USB ports are working normally.

Go into Control Panel > System > Click Hardware tab > Device Manager > Open Universal Serial Bus controllers > Delete/Uninstall all USB Root HUBs > Reboot computer. See if that fixes the problem...

Do you have multiple CD/DVD drives and/or an external hard drive attached to your computer? Or are you connected to a network?

You may need to assign a new drive letter to the USB drive.

Right click on 'My Computer' and select 'Manage'. Click on 'Disk Management' under the Storage heading.

See if the USB drive appears in the box to the right. If it does, right click on it, and choose 'Change Drive Letter and Paths...'. Change the letter to some other letter, such as z:.
