Floppy Diskette seek failure
I have a Dell 5150 Dimension. Just replace the power supply due to the amber light was blinking and computer would not turn on. Once up had a system password that I could not get pass so I shut the computer down and reset the system password. Now the computer comes up with " Floppy diskette seek failure. strike F1 key to continue, F2 to run the set up Utility". Went to F2 and turn off the diskette drive and check the boot sequence. The boot sequence to set as follow 1. Onboard or USB CD-Rom Drive, 2. Onboard SATA Hard Drive, 3. Onboard or USB Floppy Drive (not present), 4. Onboard IDE Hard Drive (not present). When I save and exit and computer then comes up with A read error occurred. Would anybody know how I can get my computer up and running.

You need to boot back into the bios and under the drives section turn off the Floppy drive if you do not actually have one. The same for the IDE drive

I think you have more trouble than just a power supply. Try F12 (or whatever key your model uses) at the first screen to access the boot menu and select the Dell Diagnostics to see what else might have failed. Run the Extended Hard Drive test, too. You can run the diagnostics from the utilities disk if necessary.

Dave, Am new to this hardware installation so please forgive me if I dont know all the terms. When you said boot back into the bios does that mean the F2 (Setup Utility) if so I did that. In the drive section on my computer it is call a diskette drive which I quess is the same as a floppy disk, I turn the diskette drive off. I dont know where the IDE is at or what it is, sorry. Please explain.

Mary, I went to F12 to do Hard Drive Diagnostic. This is what it came up with.
Drive 0 ST3808110AS - Pass,
Drive 1 No Device,
Drive 2 TSST-corp CD-RW/DVD-Rom TS-4492C - Diagnostic not Supported.
Drive 3 No Device
Try to boot to Utiltily Partition to do extended diagnostic but will not let me. Came up with "Floppy diskette seek failure, strik f1 to continue or F2 to run the set up utiltiy.

Went into Setup turn off Diskette Drive, save and exit. Turn off computer, reset jumper on mother board, turn on computer. This is what came up
Performing Automatic IDE configuration
Drive 0: Disk Drive
Drive 2: CD Rom Device
Floppy diskette seek failure
Time-of-day not set - Please run set up program
Invalid configuration information - please run setup program
Strike F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility
I hit F2, set date and time, Diskette drive went back to internal, everything else stay the same. Change Diskette drive back to Off, Save/Exit, Comes with "A Disk read error occurred"
Could I have put in a wrong power supply. This power supply had more wires connection then the one I took out. My old power supply was a 305w and I put in 350W with 20+4 pin.

If you have turned off the diskette drive in the bios(yes that is the F2 set up ) then you may now need to do a bios reset as per the steps HERE <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>. This is done using the reset jumper on the motherboard.
Before you this you should go into the bios and note all the settings. Most if not all are probably at the default settings as shown HERE <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell> but you should use that as a check or another way is to use a digital camera to snap a picture of each screen where you can change settings.
As for the IDE if you do not get a error message don't worry about it. This is a self sensing and the only place you should see this is like you mention in the boot order.
