Formatted hard drive - hardware not working - driver install problems - HELP!
I've formatted my hard drive and installed windows XP with the supplied Dell CD onto my Dimension 2400.
There seems to be issues with the drivers. I have all the original supplied CD's from Dell. When I go to the DELL Drivers webpage and enter my key tag I only get modem drivers. I can select the full list of drivers for DIM 2400 but I’m not sure which ones I need to install.
When I open the CD, there are several drivers and again I'm not sure which one's I need to install.
According to Dell I should be installing in this order but I’m not a computer wiz and I’m not sure how this is done. I printed my system devices before I formatted my hard drive just in case. Can anyone help? How should I proceed?
1. Desktop System Software - none listed
2. Chipset - I'm thinking R47822 - Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility Version 4.04.1007, A11
3. Video Adapter - I’m thinking R106456 - Intel 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller
4. Network Interface Card - Broadcom 4401 Integrated NIC (Diagnostics Utility) and Broadcom 4401 Integrated NIC (Driver)
5. Audio Adapter - ?
6. Modem - will install from modem cd supplied with computer

As you seem to have surmised, there is no Desktop System Software for this computer. The remainder of your list seems to contain the essentials. The chipset driver must be the first driver installed since it allows the operating system to more effectively talk with the devices attached to the chipset. Due to the resources required, Dell recommends installing the video adapter, sound adapter, network interface adapter, and modem drivers in that order following installation of the chipset driver. All of these except for the modem can be found on your Dell Resource CD. As you know, the modem has its own CD.
There is only one audio adapter unless you have added a PCI card for it; the ADI 198x. The other two files are patches for certain Creative Lab "upgrades". This is also called SoundMax.
The video adapter can be puzzling since there is really only one chipset involved; the 845 GV. The driver you suggest may work just fine, but I know that my own D2400 (bought in Nov. 2003) seemed to like the Springdale G driver best when I was still using the on-board video. This is also the driver suggested by the Resource CD when I perform a reinstallation.
There is also only one driver for the network interface, and it is the Broadcom that you list. The diagnostic utility might be nice, but it is not essential to the working of the device and I've never used it.
If you are looking at the on-line drivers list, the modem driver might be difficult since there were at least three that were shipped with the machine. To get a better idea of which came with yours you might be able to find out by going here: Warranty Status. Click on the tab for Original System Configuration and enter your service tag. You will get a copy of the list of devices that Dell originally delivered with the computer which should give you a clue as to the correct modem. I think you will find, however, that the driver on the CD that you have already will work just fine.
To see the complete list of drivers that were shipped with the D2400, go here: Dimension 2400 Drivers.
