Hi Benchede,

May I know the Operating system installed on your computer?
Did you make any software changes to your computer?
Since when you are facing this issue?

I would  suggest you to perform diagnostics to check the hardware functionality.

To run ‘Dell Diagnostics’

  • Power off the computer
  • Restart the computer, press F12 on the Dell logo
  • Select ‘Diagnostics’ from the boot menu
  • Please refer to the link if any error code shows up http://dell.to/OUGnqT

You may also check in Safe Mode with Networking:

  • Power off the computer
  • Restart the computer, tap F8 on Dell logo 2-3 times
  • This will take you to ‘Windows Advanced Boot Options’
  • Choose ‘Safe Mode with Networking’ in the Advanced Boot menu (use ‘up’ or ‘down’ arrow keys to highlight the option, press ‘enter’ to select)
  • When Windows finishes loading in Safe mode, check if the issue persists

Please reply if you have any questions.

Hard drives are cheap enough, provided the problem is truly with the hard drive. You'd enjoy a huge increase in performance if you paired the new hard drive with an SSD for use as a boot drive.

Found out my DELL 537 PC has a HD issue: Error: 0142  HD-1 Status 79. Now my question is: should I get a new HD and run into all the software issues when you replace a HD, EXPECIALLY on a 4year old machine or just buy a new PC??

Opinions please..

Found that the systems HD is bad or so the error tag says so: error 0142.

Is there software that can repair this or just buy a new HD?

If the hard drive is genuinely bad, it must be replaced. Sometimes the real issue is with the power supply. Sometimes.
